history

Postbus of the CTT

King Manuel I of Portugal founded the first Portuguese post office in 1520 under the name serviço de correio público ("Public Courier Service"). But it wasn't until thirteen years later, in 1533, that the post office began regular operations. For centuries the post was under the king's control. In 1821 the post office began door-to-door service. In 1880 the Royal Post was merged with the Telegraph Office, resulting in the Direcção-Geral de Correios, Telégraphos e Faróis ("General Directorate for Post, Telegraphs and Lighthouses"). In 1911 it was spun off into its own department, which was called Administração-Geral dos Correios, Telégrafos e Telefones ("Headquarters of Post, Telegraphs and Telephones"). The abbreviation CTT, which was used until now, also comes from this name. Swiss Post has had the tab as its logo since 1953.

In 1969, the post was transformed into a public company ( empresa pública ) with the new name CTT - Correios e Telecomunicações de Portugal, EP . In 1992, Prime Minister Cavaco Silva had the company converted into a joint stock company, with the Portuguese state remaining the owner. At the same time, the government spun off the Post's telecommunications division into a new company called Portugal Telecom .

In 2007, CTT operated 903 post offices and 1929 post boxes across Portugal.

In 2013, 68.5% of the share capital went public on Euronext in Lisbon. On September 5, 2014, the secondary placement of the remaining 31.5% of the share capital, which was still owned by the state, took place exclusively for institutional investors .
