Postal company
Postal companies (also postal authorities or postal service providers ) are state or private companies that transport and deliver letters . Before the introduction of automated processing in the mid-1990s, sending both letters and parcels was organizationally linked. This can still be seen in the structure of many state-owned European postal companies.
Supranational organizations
With the liberalization of the postal market, organizations of postal companies have formed in addition to the organizations of the regulatory authorities for the postal system.
International Regulatory Organizations
- Universal Postal Union (abbreviation UPU; French: Union postale universelle ; English: Universal Postal Union ), specialized agency of the UN .
- Conference Européenne des Administrations des Postes et des Télécommunications (abbreviation CEPT)
International postal organizations
United Nations
The United Nations have their own United Nations Postal Administration ( United Nations Postal Administration - UNPA). This is - besides the Postal Administration of the Order of Malta - the only organization in the world that is neither a country nor a territory and still issues postage stamps. It is also the only postal authority that issues postage stamps in three different currencies, namely US dollars, Swiss francs and euros. The first UN postage stamps were issued in 1951 after the proposal for this came from Argentina in 1947.

Germany
In the Federal Republic of Germany there was a postal monopoly of the Deutsche Bundespost until 1995 . The monopoly included the sending of letters and telecommunications. As a result of the postal reform , the state authority has been transformed into three private stock corporations: Deutsche Post AG, Deutsche Postbank AG and Deutsche Telekom AG. The monopoly for telecommunications has been lifted, there was no monopoly for sending parcels and the letter monopoly was to be lifted in 2002. It was extended for a further 5 years and gradually dismantled by December 31, 2007; Since January 1, 2008, the German mail market has been legally liberalized. Since the mid- 2000s , there have been an increasing number of private postal service providers on the German mail market , which has an annual volume of 10 billion euros. Most of these are newspaper publishers who have logistical experience as (newspaper) deliverers . These postal service providers require a license from the Federal Network Agency. They are organized in professional associations and strive for nationwide comprehensive mail delivery .
