Niger Poste ( pronunciation : [ niˈʒɛːʁ pɔst ]) is a postal company in Niger . It is predominantly state-owned.

history

When the country gained independence from France, Niger developed its own postal system. The Office des Postes et Télécommunications (OPT) was founded on July 4, 1959, as the first predecessor organization of Niger Poste . In 1961 she joined the Universal Postal Union . The OPT became a fully-fledged state-owned company by law of August 27, 1970. The Niger government had its own postal ministers , including Mouddour Zakara , Issa Ibrahim , Gabriel Cyrille , Mamadou Diallo Sory , Henri Dupuis-Yacouba and Daouda Diallo . From 1989 to 1997, Saïdou Sidibé was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the OPT.

As part of the privatization measures during the Fourth Republic under President Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara , the telecommunications sector was spun off in 1996 and merged with another company to form Société Nigérienne de Télécommunications (SONITEL), which was replaced by Niger Telecom in 2016 . The parts of the OPT that remained in state ownership were incorporated into the Office National de la Poste et de l'Épargne (ONPE) on June 6, 1996 , which was given the legal form of an établissement public à caractère industriel et commercial .

On the basis of a law of June 28, 2005, ONPE was converted into a mixed- economy company in 2006 under the name Niger Poste . This should enable private investment. However, only Niger Poste employees acquired shares in the company, which remained largely state-owned.

organization

Niger Poste is based in the capital Niamey . The company operates 72 post offices across the country. It is headed by a board of directors to which a director general is responsible.

The General Directorate is subordinate to several specialist directorates and four regional directorates:

  • the Niamey Regional Directorate (for all post offices in the capital),
  • the Regional Directorate East (for all post offices in the Diffa , Maradi and Zinder regions ),
  • the West Regional Directorate (for all post offices in the Dosso and Tillabéri regions ) and
  • the regional directorate center / north (for all post offices in the regions of Agadez and Tahoua ).
