action

The loner Paul is on his way to Mexico with his horse and his dog Abbie. On his journey through the Wild West , a drunken pastor tries to rob him, but he fails. Paul, who promised Abbie not to kill anyone else, spares the pastor's life and in return takes his water bottle with him. For a hot bath and to stock up on his provisions, Paul decides to ride to the small town of Denton, located in a valley, whose inhabitants are all sinners according to the pastor.

Once in Denton, however, the local shop is still closed and so Paul is waiting in the saloon across the street, where he meets the quick-tempered Gilly Martin. Paul asks Gilly to leave him alone, whereupon Gilly asks him to a duel in front of the saloon. When Paul continues to ignore Gilly, Abbie threatens to kill him. Then Paul leaves the saloon and knocks Gilly to the ground. Then Paul gets his provisions and goes to the local hotel, which is run by the two sisters Mary-Anne and Ellen. Mary-Anne gives him a hot bath and she becomes interested in him. Later it turns out that Ellen is Gilly's fiancé, and the marshal Clyde Martin, who confronts Paul in the hotel lobby, is Gilly's father. The marshal realizes that Paul appears to be a former US Army soldier and tells him to leave Denton immediately. While saddling his horse, Mary-Anne gives him a photo of her so that he will remember her.

Paul rides off and makes camp outside of Denton. During the night he is visited by Gilly and three of his men who want to take revenge on him. Gilly kills Abbie and lets Paul throw him down an abyss, believing that he won't survive the fall. Only slightly injured, Paul wakes up the next morning, buries Abbie and swears vengeance. On the way back to Denton he meets the pastor again, takes his revolver from him and rides on with his mule. Paul finally passes Mary-Anne and Ellen's house, where the two care for their sick father. After his revenge on Gilly, Mary-Anne asks Paul to take her to Mexico with him. However, Paul refuses because he already left his wife and daughter when he signed up for the army and gives her the photo back.

In Denton, Paul first kills Roy, who is taking a bath in the hotel. When Ellen and Mary-Anne discover the body, the marshal, Gilly and his men are alarmed by the screams. The marshal realizes that his son is responsible. He orders Harris to lock the weapons in the prison and hide on the roof. While the Marshal and Tubby try to get to the prison, Gilly takes care of the two women in the hotel. On the roof, Harris is forced by Paul to shoot the others. When Harris refuses, however, Paul kills him. Meanwhile, the Marshal and Tubby make it to prison, where Tubby is shot through the window. Paul explains to the marshal that he only wants to kill those who have his dog on their conscience.

In the hopeless situation, the marshal agrees to put down his weapon and negotiate with Paul. When both are facing each other on the street, Gilly joins them. An exchange of fire ensues in which the marshal dies in a hail of bullets, Paul is shot and saves himself in a barn. There Paul knots a lasso, which he throws around Gilly's neck and strangles him with it. After Gilly is on the ground, Paul continues to hit him. When Paul finally lets go of him, Gilly pulls out a knife - but Mary-Anne arrives and shoots Gilly. On their way back to the hotel, Mary-Anne and Paul meet the pastor, whom Paul suggests to stay in town.
