The Purge - The Cleansing is a 2013 published dystopian thriller and horror movie with socially critical undertones. Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey play the leading roles. The film's director, James DeMonaco , is also the script writer . The film opened in Germany on June 13, 2013.

action

In the year 2022, the "New Founding Fathers of America " will rule the United States . In order to keep crime rates and unemployment down, the government - successfully in this regard - organizes an annual “purge night” in which all crimes, including murder , are legal . From 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. the following day, the emergency call systems of the police, fire brigade and hospitals cannot be reached. The only rules are that senior government officials from "level 10" are not affected and only weapons up to "level 4" may be used.

James Sandin is employed in sales for a security technology company and made his fortune selling security systems for “purge night”. He lives in a large estate with his wife, Mary, and their two children, Zoey and Charlie. Exactly at 7:00 p.m. on March 21, Sandin secured his house and locked all doors and windows with protective shields. Zoey is surprised in her room by her friend Henry, who sneaked into the house shortly before the security devices were activated. Henry is not accepted by Zoey's father, who considers him too old for Zoey. He convinces Zoey that her father will not throw him out of the house that night and that the two men can have a clarifying conversation with Zoey's father.

James and his family are watching what is going on around the house through multi- screen surveillance cameras . When Charlie is alone in the room, he watches a badly bleeding stranger who calls for help because he is being followed. Charlie then deactivates the security system and lets the stranger into the house. After James reactivated the system, he threatens the stranger with a gun and wants to push him out of the house as soon as possible. At that moment, Henry appears and, contrary to his announcement, shoots James in order to get rid of his girlfriend's father with impunity. James shoots back and hits Henry in the chest. Zoey disappears after Henry succumbs to his injuries in her room. In the turmoil, the stranger can escape and hide in the spacious house. James brings Mary and Charlie back to the surveillance room and goes in search of the stranger and his daughter.

Shortly afterwards, the stranger's persecutors, who have chosen him as this year's victim, appear in front of the house and use the security cameras to give the family an ultimatum : Either the Sandins hand over the target before reinforcements arrive, or they are into the house with heavy equipment enter and kill everyone in it. Charlie finally discovers the stranger and leads him to a secret hiding place with the help of a self-constructed toy robot . When Zoey also wants to hide there, she is taken hostage by the stranger . James and Mary manage to overpower the stranger, but they don't have the heart to hand him over to his pursuers.

After the given deadline, the masked mob breaks into the house and has a bloody fight with the Sandins. Many of the intruders are killed. Nevertheless, the ringleader manages to stab James with a combat knife , but he is later shot by Zoey. The rest of the intruders are killed by the Sandins' neighbors who appear to be rushing to their aid. It turns out, however, that they only came to take revenge on the family out of envy of their wealth. As they are about to tie up the defenseless woman and her children, the strange man who is still hiding in her house comes to their aid and kills one of the neighbors. Mary gets the chance to kill the rest of the neighbors, but she wants to stop the killing. The surviving neighbors and the stranger spend the rest of the night at the Sandins' house.

When the "purge night" officially ends at seven in the morning, Mary throws the neighbors out of the house. She thanks the stranger, who then leaves. The three surviving Sandins also leave the house, while the arrival of the first emergency services in the settlement can be heard off- screen .

The credits are underlaid with news reports, which classify this year's “Purge Night” with its highest death and “purge numbers” to date as extremely successful and indicate that the next “purge” will follow in exactly one year. However, critical voices can also be heard.

criticism

"Clairvoyant future parables whose profound radicalism is deeply disturbing."

“The basic idea of THE PURGE - DIE CÄUBERUNG offers a lot of cinematic potential, which has only been exploited to a limited extent. The main characters of the film lack theatrical color and recognition value and after a successful start, logic errors and jumps in action are the annoying agenda. The message of the film, on the other hand, is hard to miss ... "

“One can forgive a genuine genre work that one tends to save on subtleties. But what else does the film have to offer? Unfortunately not much. It soon becomes clear that DeMonaco relies a little too much on his basic idea. Furthermore, he is only trying to amalgamate the horror cinema of the more recent times. The director shows a particular weakness for the gimmicks of the media horror that has been popular for years. "
