The First Purge is a dystopian thriller from Gerard McMurray from the year 2018 . The horror film with socially critical undertones is the prequel to The Purge trilogy. In the fourth part of the horror series about the purge night by James DeMonaco , the first test purge takes place on Staten Island . The film was released in US cinemas on July 4, 2018, American Independence Day , and in German cinemas the following day.

The music for the film was composed by Kevin Lax , who was responsible for McMurray's first film Burning Sands in this capacity. The soundtrack for the film, which includes 23 pieces of music, was released by Back Lot Music at the end of June 2018.
The German dubbing was based on a dialogue book and the dialogue direction by Sven Hasper on behalf of RC Production Kunze & Wunder GmbH & Co. KG in Berlin . Overall, the film received mixed feedback from the critics.
Antje Wessels remarked in her review onquotemeter.de that the prequel The First Purge is more than ever a political film. While the predecessor The Purge: Election Year appeared when Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were fighting one of the most absurd election campaigns of all time, the Trump administration is now in its second year and it is just becoming more and more difficult to find adequate opportunities To appropriately comment on the absurdity of reality, according to Wessels. Director Gerard McMurray succeeds in doing this by reducing the satirical Gaga part, which is mainly contained in part three, to a minimum and instead emphasizing again and again casually that the plot of his film disconcertingly often crosses over with the conditions in reality. The rhetoric of the leader of the "New Founding Fathers of America" is remarkably often reminiscent of that of the current US President. Wessels also notes that the motto for Donald Trump's re-election campaign " Make America Great Again " roughly matched the tagline of the third The Purge film. It's just a shame that the director McMurray and writer James DeMonaco only really play out these fundamental strengths of their film in the second half, and despite new approaches, The First Purge is not the best part of the series, according to Wessels.
