Saïdou Sidibé (born December 3, 1952 in Niamey ; † August 30, 2018 there ) was a Nigerien politician .

Life

Saïdou Sidibé did a Baccalauréat in Niamey after attending elementary and middle school . He studied at the University of Dakar in Senegal , where he obtained a Maîtrise in Management, and at the University of Bordeaux in France , from which he graduated with a Diplôme d'études supérieures spécialisées in financial control .

Sidibé entered the public service in Niger in 1979, where he held various managerial positions. From 1989 to 1997 he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the state postal and telecommunications company OPT . From 1996 to 1998 he was Vice Governor of the African Development Bank . In 1990 Saïdou Sidibé was one of the founding members of the PNDS-Tarayya party . There he worked first as party secretary for economics, then as party secretary for African integration and international cooperation. He was the main author of the party programs and campaign leader for party chairman Mahamadou Issoufou in the presidential elections of 1999 , 2004 and 2011 .

In the governments of the interim leader Daouda Malam Wanké from April 1999 to January 2000, Saïdou Sidibé held ministerial posts for the first time: initially for almost three months as assistant minister for the budget at the finance minister, then as minister for finance and economic reforms. After Mahamadou Issoufou's victory in the presidential elections in 2011 , Sidibé worked from April 2011 to August 2013 as head of the cabinet of Prime Minister Brigi Rafini and then until June 2015 as head of the cabinet of President Issoufou himself. From June 2015 to September 2016 he was again a minister, initially for finance, soon for economics and finance. His poor health led to his resignation from the government.

Instead, he became First President of the Court of Auditors in September 2016 . The independent judges' union criticized this appointment because of Sidibé's longstanding proximity to the state president, whose government the audit office had to control. However, under Sidibé, the Court of Auditors submitted a report in which irregularities and bad practices in public finance management were named.

Saïdou Sidibé was married and had three children. He died of illness in 2018 and was buried at Yantala Muslim Cemetery in Niamey.
