In the presidential elections in Niger in 1999 was determined by direct election of the President of the Republic of Niger selected. The first round of the elections took place on October 17, 1999, the second round on November 24, 1999. Mamadou Tandja ( MNSD-Nassara ) emerged as the winner .

background

President Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara was killed on April 9, 1999 in a coup led by Daouda Malam Wanké . The constitutional referendum on July 18, 1999 brought the country a semi-presidential system of government , under the conditions of which the presidential elections were held. Seven candidates ran for election, including Hamid Algabid of the Alliance for Democracy and Progress (RDP-Jama'a), the successor party to Maïnassara's National Union of Independents for Democratic Renewal , and former President Mahamane Ousmane of the Democratic and Social Assembly (CDS-Rahama), who was deposed by Maïnassara in a coup in 1996.

Results

First round of elections

Of 4,560,508 registered voters, 1,990,370 went to the polls. This corresponds to a turnout of 43.6%. Of the 1,990,370 ballot papers submitted, 1,909,241 were rated as valid and 81,129 as invalid (or blank ballot papers).

Second round of voting

A second round of elections was necessary because none of the candidates could win an absolute majority of the votes in the first round of elections. Of 4,608,090 registered voters, 1,815,411 went to the polls. This corresponds to a turnout of 39.4%. Of the 1,815,411 ballot papers submitted, 1,772,654 were rated as valid and 42,757 as invalid (or blank ballot papers).

consequences

In the parliamentary elections on November 24, 1999 , the MNSD-Nassara, the party of the victorious presidential candidate Mamadou Tandja, achieved 38 of the 83 seats in the National Assembly and thus the best result of all the participating parties. Tandja was sworn in as President on December 22, 1999. He appointed his party colleague Hama Amadou prime minister of a coalition government with the CDS-Rahama of Mahamane Ousmane, his former rival in the presidential elections.
