The elections for the 1957 Territorial Assembly in Niger took place on March 31, 1957.

background

Niger was an overseas territory of France at the time of the elections . The Territorial Assembly was the overseas parliament, whose then fifty members were last elected in the 1952 elections to the Territorial Assembly. The now sixty parliamentarians were to be elected for the first time in 1957 using universal suffrage . The Union of Independent Nigerians and Sympathizers (UNIS), which had previously held all the seats in the Territorial Assembly, had dissolved shortly before the elections on February 24, 1957.

The elections took place on March 31, 1957. The turnout was 28.63%.

consequences

Immediately after the elections, Niger got its own government for the first time, the Conseil de gouvernement . The head of government was the respective governor of France in Niger, this was Paul Bordier at the time the government was formed . Djibo Bakary from the election winner Sawaba became deputy head of government . The other ministers also belonged to the Sawaba. Georges Condat was elected President of the Territorial Assembly. After the constitutional referendum on September 28, 1958 , the Territorial Assembly was dissolved on November 14, 1958 and new elections were scheduled on December 14, 1958 .
