Constitutional referendum in Niger in 1992

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The constitutional referendum in Niger in 1992 took place on December 26, 1992. The majority of those eligible to vote in Niger voted for the adoption of the Third Republic's constitution.

background

From 1991 onwards, the constitution of the Third Republic was drawn up by a national conference, which included members of various political and civil society organizations. It was supposed to replace the presidential republic under Ali Saibou with a semi-presidential system of government and the one-party system of the National Development Society Movement with a multi-party system. It was also intended to eliminate the last remaining influence of Niger's armed forces on the political landscape.

Result

Of 3,900,881 registered voters, 2,207,220 went to the polls. This corresponds to a voter turnout of 56.6%. Of the voting slips submitted, 2,166,920 were considered valid and 40,300 were considered invalid.

consequences

The Constitution of the Third Republic came into force on January 22, 1993. In the parliamentary and presidential elections held shortly thereafter , the former Unity Party National Development Society and its presidential candidate Mamadou Tandja emerged as losers.
