Presidential elections in Niger 1965
The 1965 presidential elections in Niger were held on September 30, 1965 and were the first direct election of a president of the Republic of Niger since the country's independence in 1960, as Hamani Diori , the country's first president, was indirectly elected by the Nigerian National Assembly in 1960 .
The 1965 elections were sham elections conducted under the conditions of a one-party state : President Hamani Diori, who had been in office since 1960, was the only candidate on the ballot because no competitor had been admitted. The stated voter turnout of 98.4% also seems implausible in view of the infrastructural conditions of Niger at the time and the lack of choice.
