In the 2016 presidential elections in Niger , the President of the Republic of Niger was elected by direct election. The first round of the elections took place on February 21, 2016, the second on March 20, 2016. The incumbent Mahamadou Issoufou ( PNDS-Tarayya ) emerged as the winner .

background

The regular elections took place after the end of the five-year term of Mahamadou Issoufou (PNDS-Tarayya), who had been elected in the previous presidential election in 2011 . The election date on February 21, 2016 was the same as that of the parliamentary elections in Niger in 2016 .

In addition to incumbent Issoufou, fourteen other candidates were admitted to the 2016 elections. There was no woman among them. Mahamadou Issoufou's main challengers included Seini Oumarou from MNSD-Nassara , Hama Amadou from MODEN-FA Lumana Africa and Mahamane Ousmane from MNRD-Hankuri. In the MNSD-Nassara, the former Prime Minister and President of Parliament, Seini Oumarou, took over from President Mamadou Tandja , who was ousted in 2010 . In the 2011 presidential election, he was Mahamadou Issoufou's opponent in the runoff election. Hama Amadou, also a former Prime Minister and Speaker of Parliament, campaigned from a prison cell. He was accused of being involved in a baby trafficking affair. Mahamane Ousmane had already been president from 1993 to 1996. The CDS-Rahama party , of which he had been chairman for many years, had nominated Abdou Labo as a presidential candidate, which is why Ousmane stood as a candidate for the MNRD-Hankuri party. Seini Oumarou, Hama Amadou and Mahamane Ousmane as well as Amadou Boubacar Cissé , the candidate of the UDR-Tabbat , agreed in January 2016 to support each other in the event of a runoff against Mahamadou Issoufou.
