Mamadou Tandja, 2004 presidential election winner in Niger

In the presidential elections in Niger in 2004 was determined by direct election of the President of the Republic of Niger selected. The first round of the elections took place on November 16, 2004, the second round on December 4, 2004. The incumbent Mamadou Tandja ( MNSD-Nassara ) emerged as the winner .

background

The presidential elections were required at the end of the president's regular term of five years. The incumbent Mamadou Tandja stood for election again. His main competitor was the opposition leader Mahamadou Issoufou of the Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism (PNDS-Tarraya). Five of the six candidates had already run in the previous presidential elections in 1999 . Former Prime Minister Amadou Cheiffou applied for the presidency for the first time. Cheiffou, until then the deputy party chairman of the Democratic and Social Assembly (CDS-Rahama) under the leadership of Mahamane Ousmane , split off from CDS-Rahama in January 2004 with the Social Democratic Alliance (RSD-Gaskiya).

UNDP observers rated the first round of elections as democratic, free and transparent, despite some shortcomings. The election observers of the Francophonie and the Nigerien Human Rights Commission complained about delays in setting up the voting facilities in some polling stations, problems with the distribution of new voter registration cards and a lack of logistical support from the responsible administrative commissions. There were also reports of attempts to buy votes.
