Its party statutes were approved on December 11, 1990. The founding congress took place in Zinder in January 1992 . In the parliamentary elections of 1993 , the UPDP-Chamoua won 2 out of 83 seats. The party chairman Salifou was not allowed to run as a former president of parliament in the presidential elections of 1993 . Illa Kané competed for the UPDP Chamoua . Kané was fifth of eight candidates with a share of 2.55% of the vote. In the 1995 general election , the party won one of 83 seats. The UPDP-Chamoua, together with the major parties MNSD-Nassara and PNDS-Tarayya, formed the parliamentary opposition to President Mahamane Ousmane of the CDS-Rahama in a system of cohabitation . The parliamentary elections held in 1996 after President Ousmane was overthrown by a military coup were boycotted by the CDS-Rahama, MNSD-Nassara and PNDS-Tarayya parties, but not by the UPDP-Chamoua, which with four out of 83 seats was its best to date Result achieved. The new government was deposed in 1999. In the following presidential election in 1999 , André Salifou ran and was sixth of seven candidates with 2.08% of the vote. In the parliamentary elections of 1999 , the UPDP-Chamoua failed to re-enter and has not been represented in the National Assembly since then. The party supported the MNSD Nassara candidate Seini Oumarou in the 2011 presidential election , who was defeated by Mahamadou Issoufou of PNDS Tarayya.
