The National Union of Independents for Democratic Renewal ( French : Union Nationale des Indépendants pour le Renouveau Démocratique , abbreviation: UNIRD ) was a political party in Niger that existed from 1996 to 1997.

history

On January 27, 1996 Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara deposed the Nigerien President Mahamane Ousmane in a coup d'état . He formed a support committee ( Comité de Soutien à Ibrahim Baré Maïnassara , COSIMBA for short ), from which the National Union of Independents for Democratic Renewal emerged in the same year. Contrary to his original announcement, Maïnassara ran as a candidate for UNIRD in the 1996 presidential election , which he won. In the parliamentary elections of 1996 , which were boycotted by the major opposition parties, UNIRD received 58 out of 83 seats in the National Assembly . Maïnassara was accused of massive electoral fraud in both elections. In August 1997 UNIRD became the party Alliance for Democracy and Progress (RDP-Jama'a).
