José Palmeira Lessa

José Palmeira Lessa (born January 18, 1942 in Coruripe ) is a Brazilian clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Aracaju .

Life

José Palmeira Lessa was ordained a priest on July 3, 1968 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him on June 21, 1982 auxiliary bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro and titular bishop of Sita . The Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, Eugênio Cardinal de Araújo Sales , donated him episcopal ordination on August 24 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were José Alberto Lopes de Castro Pinto , Bishop of Guaxupé , and Celso José Pinto da Silva , Bishop of Vitória da Conquista . As a motto he chose FRAGILIS CUM FRAGILIBUS .

On October 30, 1987, he was appointed Bishop of Propriá . On December 6, 1996, the Pope appointed him Coadjutor Archbishop of Aracaju. With the resignation of Luciano José Cabral Duartes , he followed this on August 26, 1998 in the office of Archbishop of Aracaju.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on January 18, 2017.
