The Archdiocese of Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro ( Latin Archidioecesis Sancti Sebastiani Fluminis Ianuarii , Portuguese Arquidiocese de Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro ) is one in Brazil located Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Rio de Janeiro in the State of Rio de Janeiro .

The Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro was on July 19, 1575 by Pope Gregory XIII. from territorial cession of the diocese of São Salvador da Bahia established as the territorial prelature of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro . On November 16, 1676, the territorial prelature of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro was raised to a diocese and subordinated to the Archdiocese of São Salvador da Bahia as a suffragan . The elevation to the archbishopric took place on April 27, 1892. The archbishopric of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro ceded parts of its territory several times in its history to establish new dioceses.
Since 1905, all archbishops of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro have been made cardinals , so that São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro is traditionally a bishopric with the dignity of cardinals.
The archbishopric is the sponsor of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) .
