The Archdiocese of Aparecida (Latin Archidioecesis Apparitiopolitana , Portuguese Arquidiocese de Aparecida ) is a Roman Catholic Archdiocese based in Aparecida in the Brazilian state of São Paulo .

history

Since the apparition of Mary in 1717 and currently with almost 8 million annual pilgrims, the city of Aparecida has been the most important place of pilgrimage in Brazil .

On April 19, 1958, Pope Pius XII declared. through the bull Sacrorum antistitum Aparecida to the archdiocese and confirms the outstanding importance of the city for Catholic Brazil. The new diocese received areas of the Archdiocese of São Paulo and the Diocese of Taubaté. Pope John XXIII appointed Carlos Carmelo de Vasconcelos Motta on November 29, 1958, with effect from December 8 of the same year as Apostolic Administrator of the new Archdiocese. He became the first Archbishop of Aparecida in April 1964 .
