Geraldo María de Morais Penido

Geraldo María de Morais Penido (born September 6, 1918 in Rio Manso de Bonfim , Minas Gerais, Brazil , † November 15, 2002 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and archbishop of Aparecida .

Life

Geraldo María de Morais Penido received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte on April 4, 1942 .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on March 10, 1956 auxiliary bishop in Belo Horizonte and titular bishop of Avissa . The Archbishop of Belo Horizonte, Antônio dos Santos Cabral , ordained him episcopal on May 11th of the same year . Co -consecrators were Archbishop Hélder Câmara , auxiliary bishop in São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro , and Luis do Amaral Mousinho , Bishop of Ribeirão Preto .

On November 30, 1957, he was appointed coadjutor bishop of Juiz de Fora . With the death of Justino José de Sant'Anas on June 9, 1958, he succeeded him as Bishop of Juiz de Fora. Pope John XXIII raised the diocese to the rank of archbishopric on April 14, 1962 and appointed Geraldo María de Morais Penido its first archbishop.

He participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on December 1, 1977 Coadjutor Archbishop of Aparecida. With the death of Carlos Carmelo Cardinal de Vasconcelos Mottas on September 18, 1982, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Aparecida. Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation on July 12, 1995.
