Life

Antônio dos Santos Cabral was ordained a priest on November 1, 1907 . He first worked as a pastor in his hometown before he was appointed canon of the cathedral chapter of Aracaju . Pope Pius X awarded him the title of monsignor in January 1914 .

Already in April 1916 and June 1917 Pope Benedict XV. the office of Bishop of Natal , but Cabral refused twice. On September 1, 1917, he finally accepted the reappointment as Bishop of Natal. He received the episcopal ordination on April 14, 1918 from Cardinal Joaquim Arcoverde de Albuquerque Cavalcanti , Archbishop of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro . Co- consecrators were the future Cardinal Sebastião Leme da Silveira Cintra , Archbishop of Olinda , and Cláudio José Gonçalves Ponce de Leão , Archbishop Emeritus of Porto Alegre . In Natal he immediately initiated the construction of a seminary and the new cathedral. In November 1921 he was appointed the first bishop of the newly established diocese of Belo Horizonte. The enthronement took place on April 30, 1922.

Pope Pius XI elevated the diocese to an archbishopric on February 1, 1924 and Cabral became archbishop of Belo Horizonte. There he showed the same drive as in Natal. He saw the Eucharist as a life-giving instrument, which was also expressed in his motto for his bishop's coat of arms, Per Eucharistiam Vivat in nobis Christ . Dom Cabral did not take part in the Second Vatican Council , probably also for health reasons. He died in November 1967.
