João Resende Costa

João Resende Costa SDB (born October 19, 1910 in Borda da Mata in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil ; † July 21, 2007 ) was a Roman Catholic religious and archbishop of Belo Horizonte .

Life

João Resende Costa studied philosophy in Lavrinhas from 1927 to 1929 and joined the Order of the Salesians of Don Bosco in 1928 . From 1932 he studied theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and received his doctorate there in 1937 . On July 28, 1935, he was ordained a priest in the Basilica of St. Ignatius of Loyola . In the religious community he was director of the Lyceum Coração de Jesus in São Paulo , rector of the Salesian seminary for theology in São Paulo. From 1948 to 1952 he was Provincial of the Province of São Paulo. In 1952 he became a member of the General Council of the Order in Turin .

On February 25, 1953 he was by Pope Pius XII. appointed Bishop of Ilhéus . On May 24th of the same year the episcopal ordination took place by the Archbishop of São Paulo , Carlos Carmelo Cardinal de Vasconcelos Motta . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Corumbá , Orlando Chaves SDB, and Antônio Campelo de Aragão SDB, Auxiliary Bishop in Cuiabá . His coat of arms was "In Lauden Gloriae Dei". On July 19, 1957, he was appointed coadjutor archbishop of the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte and titular archbishop of Martyropolis . He participated in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as a council father.

With the death of Antônio dos Santos Cabrals on November 15, 1967, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Belo Horizonte. In 1968 he took part in the Bishops' Conference in Medellín and in 1977 in the Synod of Bishops . He was Grand Chancellor of the Catholic University of Minas. On May 2, 1986, Pope John Paul II granted his age-related resignation. João Resende Costa had been in Madre Tereza Hospital in Belo Horizonte since the end of 2004 , where he succumbed to respiratory failure in 2007 at the age of 96 .
