Serafím Cardinal Fernandes de Araújo (born August 13, 1924 in Minas Novas , Brazil , † October 8, 2019 in Belo Horizonte ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Belo Horizonte .

Life

Serafim Fernandes de Araújo studied in Belo Horizonte and Rome trays Catholic theology and philosophy . In Rome he was a seminarian at the Pontifical Brazilian College of Pius . He received his doctorate in both theology and canon law and received the sacrament of priestly ordination for the Archdiocese of Diamantina on March 12, 1949 in St. Peter's Basilica in Rome by Archbishop Luigi Traglia . He then lectured canon law at the seminary of Diamantina and worked as a parish chaplain in Gouveia . He also worked in the diocesan organization for catechesis and in teacher training.

On January 19, 1959, Pope John XXIII appointed him . the titular bishop of Verinopolis and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte . He was ordained bishop on May 7th of the same year by the Archbishop of Diamantina, José Newton de Almeida Baptista . Co- consecrators were the coadjutor archbishop of Belo Horizonte, João Resende Costa SDB , and the bishop of Araçuaí , José Maria Pires . As Auxiliary Bishop of Belo Horizonte, he became rector of the newly established Catholic University of Minas Gerais, the current Pontifical Catholic University (PUC Minas) and professor in the Faculty of Law. He remained rector for 21 years. Among other things, he was chairman of the Brazilian Association of Catholic Universities and a member of the advisory committee of the Regional Center for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean. From 1962 to 1965 he was one of the bishops who attended the Second Vatican Council. He was involved in the general conferences of the Latin American Bishops' Council CELAM in Puebla (1979) and Santo Domingo (1992), where important guidelines of the Catholic Church were adopted.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular archbishop pro hac vice of Verinopolis and coadjutor archbishop of the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte on November 22, 1982 . With the age-related resignation of João Resende Costas SDB on February 5, 1986, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Belo Horizonte. In 1991 he was Vice President of CNBB after repeatedly chairing Eastern Regional II.

In solemn consistory of February 21, 1998 Serafim Fernandes de Araújo was a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Luigi Grignion de Montfort in the College of Cardinals received.

On January 28, 2004, he resigned from the archbishopric for reasons of age. John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. Serafim Cardinal Fernandes de Araújo was a member of the Pontifical Council “Iustitia et Pax” .
