Albert Oehlen (born September 17, 1954 in Krefeld ) is a German painter , object and installation artist .

Life

Albert Oehlen, Markus Oehlen's brother , was born in Krefeld in 1954. In 1978 he painted a mural with Werner Büttner for the Welt bookstore in Hamburg. A pornographic detail in the picture immediately caused public nuisance, but the two artists responsible showed their remorse in a letter of apology and agreed to correct their mistake. Even if there were doubts and reservations about the two artists from the epoch that was coming to an end, they did not allow themselves to be deprived of their freedom regarding their painting. Together they founded the League to Combat Contradictory Behavior. From 1977 to 1981 he studied at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg with Claus Böhmler and Sigmar Polke .

In 1981 Oehlen received a solo exhibition with his work at Max Hetzler in Stuttgart. In 1982 he painted mirror images and worked with Martin Kippenberger on the sculpture "Orgone Box at Night". In 2000, he was appointed to a professorship at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , which he held until 2009. He designed the monumental mosaic Bionic Boogie for the exhibition In Between for the World Exhibition Expo 2000 in Hanover. For the Cologne Taschen he designed in the publishing headquarters at Hohenzollernring 53 a tiled floor.

In 2015, Oehlen, like Kanye West , received an honorary doctorate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago .

He lives in Gais AR .

Albert Oehlen is assigned to the so-called New Wilds and is a protagonist of Neo-Expressionism. He himself describes his work as “non-objective” and describes the term as “silly”. His work is multimedia oriented, but the focus is on painting. Many works are designed as a series; the artist is concerned with the possibilities of painting. A number of works were created in collaboration with other artists such as Werner Büttner , Georg Herold , Markus Oehlen , Martin Kippenberger and Jonathan Meese .
