Taschen is an independent, family-owned publisher for illustrated books with publications on the subjects of art, architecture, design, film, photography and lifestyle, founded on February 9, 1980 by Benedikt Taschen in Cologne .

history

1980-1984

Benedikt Taschen originally founded the publishing house to sell his extensive comic collection. Soon the first comics were published himself and in 1984 he ventured into the art book business. To do this, he borrowed money from an aunt who trusted her nephew's intuition and used it to buy a remaining 40,000 English edition of an English Magritte picture book at a price of one dollar each at a remaining stock fair in the USA . The entire edition was sold out within two months at a retail price of DM 9.95 at the time - an experience that would shape him. Taschen concluded from this that there was a gap in the art book market, which had previously been dominated by expensive art books, and that there was apparently a market for well-designed, multilingual, inexpensive art illustrated books that were printed in fairly large numbers. Encouraged by this success, he dared to venture into the art book market for the first time with a monograph on Annie Leibovitz .

1985-1995

In 1985 he started the successful Kleine Reihe with a monograph on Salvador Dalí , which now comprises over 200 titles and is available in up to 30 languages. This was followed by the establishment of further lines and the expansion to new areas of focus such as architecture, design, film and lifestyle. The motto of the publishing house policy remained to offer a wide, interested public well-produced art books at affordable prices and thus to give an increasingly international audience access to new subject areas. In addition, bags meanwhile sold inflatable plastic animals .

In 1986 Angelika Herbert started working as an editor at the publishing house. She became head editor and married Benedikt Taschen in 1996. Since then she has been called Angelika Taschen and has contributed to the publishing house's success by publishing more than 150 books herself. In 2004 the two were divorced.

1996 – today

In the second half of the 1990s, the sales structures were expanded with branches in Paris, London, New York, Madrid and Tokyo. In 1999 the publisher opened up to the high-price segment with a signed and so-called SUMO edition by Helmut Newton , limited to 10,000 copies , which was sold out within a short time. Copy number one - hand-signed by over 100 of the famous personalities depicted in the book - achieved 620,000 DM at a Berlin charity auction - bought by Bertil Hult  - and broke the record for the most expensive book of the 20th century. In January 2010 the Cologne regional court issued an injunction against the publisher, which prohibited the publisher from not being allowed to sell the reduced, modified version of the Helmut Newton volume published ten years later as "SUMO". Helmut Newton publisher Lothar Schirmer had previously submitted a corresponding application against Taschen Verlag for breach of competition law . The Newton sumo was later followed by Taschen's mammoth work GOAT - Greatest Of All Times - a homage to Muhammad Ali , which Der Spiegel described as "the biggest, heaviest and most dazzling thing that has ever been printed". There followed collector's editions u. a. on Nobuyoshi Araki , Peter Beard , David LaChapelle , Leni Riefenstahl , Sebastião Salgado , Annie Leibovitz , the Rolling Stones , Ai Weiwei , Gisele Bündchen , Naomi Campbell and David Hockney , which were edited personally by Benedikt Taschen and, according to the publisher's own information, mostly within a few years achieved many times their original selling price. The publication of Leni Riefenstahl's work was critically discussed in the media: The illustrated book "defies the argumentative impasse into which every argument with Riefenstahl, which cannot do without a moralizing assessment, inevitably leads" ( ZEIT ) and the Spiegel asked " why he [the publisher] throws Leni Riefenstahl products so massively on the market [...] when other people might see the material as fascist "and attested" market economy ignorance [...] - or [...] classic German coping fatigue. "Benedikt Taschen himself explained in an interview about the lack of problematization of Riefenstahl's role in the Third Reich: “That was not our job. There are enough books that you can and should read about it. ”One of the most expensive collector's items is being offered for € 480,000 , along with an extremely rare 348 gram piece of meteorite and an aluminum book stand designed by Marc Newson . In the summer of 2012, the publisher, together with Axel Springer SE, published “[d] the large picture book” with over 700 prints from the front pages of the tabloid newspaper . In spring 2014, the artists Ditte Ejlerskov and EvaMarie Lindahl criticized the male-dominated focus of the Basic Art series of bags, which at the time consisted of 95 books, five of which were dedicated to women. The Malmö Art Gallery and the Women's History Museum in Umeå took up the topic as part of their exhibitions. The artists presented an alternative list of international artists - including Marina Abramović , Judy Chicago , Barbara Kruger , Camille Claudel , Louise Bourgeois , Barbara Hepworth , Eva Hesse , Ana Mendieta , Hannah Höch , Bridget Riley , Sophie Taeuber-Arp , Meret Oppenheim , Agnes Martin and Hannah Wilke - who they thought would be suitable for the Basic Art series. Despite #MeToo allegations against Mario Testino , the publisher is planning to publish another volume with the photographer in 2020. However, further publications with the equally controversial photographer Terry Richardson are not planned.

As of 2014, Taschen-Verlag is the world market leader in the illustrated book sector with more than 20 million books sold annually. Taschen has subsidiaries in Germany, the USA, Great Britain, France, Spain, Japan and Hong Kong. Since 2014, the publishing family has also been active in the art trade through the Taschen Art company and has interests in restaurants in Los Angeles.

In January 2017 Marlene Taschen took over the management as Managing Director . In 2019, the publisher took over shares in a bookbindery in Italy.

program

The publisher's publications range from extensive editions with the complete works of Leonardo da Vinci to medium-sized books to the so-called Icons series, in which small volumes in flexible covers cover various topics (from historical advertising campaigns for Las Vegas to architecture and nude photos ) cover. The publisher also occasionally produces calendars, address books and postcards with familiar motifs.

In addition to selling relatively inexpensive art books, the publisher has been known to work in the mainstream - bookstores to bring that found previously only in a very limited market distribution. The spectrum of the literature sold ranged from fetish picture books to gay literature and historical erotica to men's magazines and pornography . Taschen helped bring it to a wider public by including this potentially controversial material in its mainstream mainstream programming. In October 2019, Marlene Taschen explained to Der Spiegel that the discrepancy had to be tolerated when publishing publications on automobile manufacturers such as Ferrari and a volume with contributions by scientists on the state of the earth (James Lovelock et al., Die Erde und Ich ) , because the world is "complex" and the "target groups are diverse, there is no tendency to moral judgments."

The publisher operates its own bookshops in Beverly Hills, Brussels, Hollywood, Cologne, London, Milan, Miami and Paris. The majority of the publisher's own branches are designed by Philippe Starck . Marc Newson took on the design of the Milan store. For the now closed New York store, the Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes designed a mural. Additional pop-up stores have occasionally been opened in Madrid, Paris and Berlin. In December 2014, Taschen also opened the publisher's first gallery for photographs and prints in Los Angeles , which was closed in 2018 after exhibitions with Albert Watson, Ellen von Unwerth and Michael Muller, among others. In addition to its head office in Cologne, Taschen has publishing offices in London, Los Angeles, New York and Paris. Since December 2016 Taschen has had a store in Charlottenburg - after the opening of the first shop on Friedrichstrasse in 2009 - again in Berlin, and since August 2018 in Hong Kong.
