Family and education

Bertil Hult was born in 1941 to a lawyer and grew up in Stockholm. Hult got his first job at the age of 16 at the financial services group SEB , where he was used for running errands.

In London , Hult worked for a shipbroker . During this time he learned English . This convinced him that the best way to learn a language is through immersion . He returned to Sweden , continued his education and went to Lund University, which he left after a year.

Career

In 1965 he founded the language school and travel company EF Education in Lund , Sweden.

EF originally started out as an organization providing language travel and study abroad for Swedish secondary school students to travel to England and learn English there. Hult's own experiences with dyslexia convinced him that immersion in foreign cultures was the best way to learn a language.

Hult was EF CEO until 2002 and Chairman of the Board until 2008. Today he is partially retired. Under Bertil Hult's leadership, EF grew into a multi-billion dollar company with more than 40,000 employees in 500 schools and educational programs in 53 different countries.

EF continues to grow today. The company is opening new language schools all over the world, expanding its online language school offering ( EF Englishtown ), placing au pairs with American families and coordinating school trips and international exchange programs. EF cooperates with a business school ( Hult International Business School ; formerly Arthur D. Little School of Management), which was named after Bertil Hult.

Private

Today, Hult is the Swede with the eleventh largest fortune (around four billion dollars ) and lives in Lucerne , Switzerland . He is married and has four children, all of whom work in the family business. Hult has dyslexia  .

According to media reports, Hult provided the wedding couple with his private jet - a Dassault Falcon 7X  - as well as his private luxury yacht and later his holiday home in the US state of Colorado for the honeymoon of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden . He owns several holiday homes in the fishing village of Torekov in southern Sweden .

In 2006, Hult was named International Sweden of the Year. In 2012 Bertil Hult received the Lucia Trade Award from the Swedish-American Chamber of Commerce for his contribution to promoting free trade between Sweden and the USA .

Charity work

In addition to EF, Bertil Hult has worked with charities that fight drug abuse and promote education for dyslexic people. In 1993, Hult was a founding member of the Mentor Foundation. This is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit and non-political organization that supports initiatives and research in the field of drug abuse prevention. Hult has been chairman of the board since the foundation was founded. He is currently their trustee.

Hult also supports the Bertil Hult Prize. For the first time in 2003 and annually thereafter, this award is given to the Swedish school, which offers the best support for dyslexics.
