Lothar Schirmer (born February 1, 1945 in Schmalkalden ) is a German publisher and art collector.

Life

Lothar Schirmer was born as the son of Werner Schirmer, who later became the commercial director of Bremen Vulkan , and his mother had trained as a dressmaker. His brothers are the physicist Jochen Schirmer and the director Friedrich Schirmer . The business administration graduate founded and managed the Schirmer / Mosel publishing house for art books. Schirmer made friends with artists such as Cy Twombly and Joseph Beuys at a young age and began to collect their works. Schirmer created his publishing start-up capital by buying and selling art prints and drawings. Schirmer made his publishing debut with the rediscovery of August Sander, the then almost forgotten visual artist of the Weimar Republic . Schirmer had acquired the rights to the portraits and landscapes. In a similar way he discovered previously unknown photographs by Heinrich Zille from the Berlin “Milljöh” around 1900.

In 1973, the work of art Joseph Beuys' bathtub , which Schirmer had made available for a traveling exhibition in Leverkusen, was destroyed.

Together with Tanja Graf , Schirmer founded the literary publisher Schirmer / Graf in 2003 , which has not existed in its original form since 2015.

On Schirmer's 75th birthday, the book About My Artists was published. Speeches and lectures , a small almanac with twenty speeches on authors and artists whose illustrated books and books have been published by Schirmer / Mosel Verlag for 46 years.
