Peter von Becker (journalist)

Peter von Becker (* 1947 in Mannheim ) is a German cultural journalist , author and writer who has also worked as a dramaturge and theater critic.

Life

Von Becker studied law , sociology , art history and philosophy at the LMU Munich . In 1978 he received his doctorate there with a legal thesis on “Offenders and suspects in the mass media”. From 1971 he wrote essayistic and literary contributions as well as literary, theater and film reviews for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the Zeit and Theater heute . He has also written radio and television reports and the script for a documentary about George Tabori .

In 1980/1981 he worked as a dramaturge at the Schauspiel Frankfurt and then became editor in charge and co-editor of the magazine Theater heute. Since 1980 he has also been a lecturer for dramaturgy and theater history at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt / Main.

Between 1997 and 2005 von Becker headed the culture department of the Tagesspiegel . Since 2003 he has been honorary professor at the Berlin University of the Arts . Von Becker developed the six-part television documentary "The Century of Theater" for ZDF and 3sat .

Peter von Becker is married and has two children. He lives in Berlin .
