The Lothar Schirmer Collection is the private collection of the Munich publisher Lothar Schirmer .

The foundation of the only partially public art collection of the passionate collector Lothar Schirmer, who was born in Schmalkalden in 1945, was laid in 1969 and 1972 through the first purchases of drawings by Cy Twombly and Joseph Beuys , with an emphasis on photography in the period that followed.

The collection contains extensive groups of works by Joseph Beuys, Cindy Sherman and Cy Twombly, but also works by John Cage , Walter De Maria , August Sander , the Bechers , Erwin Heerich , Lothar Baumgarten , Hanne Darboven , Hans-Peter Feldmann , Gerhard Richter , Jeff Wall , Thomas Struth , Andreas Gursky , Jörg Sasse and others

In addition to managing the publishing house at Schirmer / Mosel Verlag , which was founded in 1974 with Erik Mosel, Schirmer also emerges as an author, contributor and curator . The collection also gives rise to exhibitions in the Schirmer / Mosel Showroom in Munich belonging to the publisher .
