Lothar Baumgarten

Lothar Baumgarten (born October 5, 1944 in Rheinsberg ; † December 3, 2018 in Berlin ) was a German artist .

life and work

Baumgarten studied in 1968 at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and from 1961 to 1971 at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf - including a year as a student of Joseph Beuys , whose anthroposophical ideas also shaped his work. In 1972 Baumgarten had his first solo exhibition at the Konrad Fischer gallery in Düsseldorf. In 1978/79 he stayed with two Yanomami tribes in the Venezuelan-Brazilian border area for eighteen months . He exhibited sound and video recordings as well as drawings, paintings and photographic works from this period in 2011/12 at the Museum Folkwang in the six-month exhibitionLothar Baumgarten Evening of Time - Señores Naturales Yanomami before. The ethnographic collection and documentation he had compiled was donated to the Folkwang Foundation.

Baumgarten's artistic activity was characterized by installations and situational artistic works. From 1994 until his resignation due to unreasonable working conditions in 2006, he was a professor at the University of the Arts in Berlin .

Lothar Baumgarten lived and worked in Berlin and New York City .
