The prize is awarded in the following categories:

In a two-stage process, institutions and individuals first select suitable candidates for the selection committees determined by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia , which then submit proposals for the award winners to the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia. As a rule, these should not be older than 35 years and be connected to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia through birth, residence or artistic work. Self-applications are excluded.

The awards are usually presented in the year of the call for applications by the respective Minister for Family, Children, Youth, Culture and Sport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
