Thomas Kling

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Kling (born June 5, 1957 in Bingen am Rhein , † April 1, 2005 in Dormagen ) was a German writer .

Life

Thomas Kling grew up in Hilden and attended a humanistic grammar school in Düsseldorf . He studied German, history and art history in Cologne , Düsseldorf and Vienna and stayed in Finland for a long time . Since 1983 he has presented his poems at public readings - first in Vienna, then in the Rhineland - which often had a performance character, and performed together with jazz drummer Frank Köllges .

He lived with his wife, the painter Ute Langanky , until his death in 2005 from lung cancer , on the premises of the Hombroich rocket station near Neuss . Thomas Kling was buried in Neuss-Holzheim .

The Thomas Kling Archive is housed in the poet's former study and is part of the archives of the Insel Hombroich Foundation .

plant

For the literary critic Michael Braun , Thomas Kling was "undoubtedly the most important poet of his generation". It was influenced by authors such as Mayröcker , Jandl and Celan as well as the Viennese group around Artmann and Bayer and is considered to be a style-forming element for German-language poetry after 1990.

Kling's texts are determined in their compositional form by performative elements, with word sound and word melody playing an important role. At the same time, however, a sensual and semantic multi-dimensionality is constitutive of the texts. Kling's linguistic archaeological poems only show their full complexity in the carefully crafted print versions.

Kling published his first texts in the magazine Zwiebelzwerg - newspaper for art and social affairs . He published his first book in 1977 in the Zwiebelzwerg Verlag .

Thomas Kling was a member of the PEN Center of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt .

reception

In 2011, the Kunststiftung NRW established a Thomas Kling poetics lectureship at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn . Authors and translators from North Rhine-Westphalia receive a scholarship for two semesters each and are given a teaching position at the Institute for German Studies, Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies. With this form of author support, the Art Foundation intends to build a bridge between science and literature.
