The Kunststiftung NRW was founded in 1989 by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia as the “Foundation for Art and Culture of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia”. Its aim is to promote art and culture that are characterized by special programmatic features and concepts that provide impetus and that are closely related to North Rhine-Westphalia. In addition, the promotion of particularly talented young artists and international cultural exchange are among the central tasks. The foundation is based in the House of Foundations , which was built in 1895/1896 as the officers' mess of a Wilhelmine barracks in Düsseldorf - Derendorf .

Prices

The foundation awards several prizes, including the Straelen Translator Prize of the Kunststiftung NRW, endowed with 25,000 euros, and the Nam June Paik Award .

Since 2011, the foundation has also awarded the Mauricio Kagel Music Prize from the Kunststiftung NRW every two years . It is intended to honor musicians who “ work in an interdisciplinary manner in the spirit of the great German-Argentinian composer Mauricio Kagel (1931–2008), are looking for new artistic forms of expression and sound out new aspects of the reception of music.” The endowment is 50,000 euros, of which 20,000 Euros are to be used for an artistic project in NRW. The first prize winner was Georges Aperghis ; other prize winners were Michel van der Aa , Rebecca Saunders and Simon Steen-Andersen .

Initiatives

The foundation also finances various initiatives, in particular the Artist-in-Residence program , which enables artists from North Rhine-Westphalia to spend several months at a location on the art scene abroad and foreign artists to make return visits to North Rhine-Westphalia. In 2011 the foundation set up the Thomas Kling Poetics Lecturer at the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Bonn . Authors and translators from North Rhine-Westphalia each receive a teaching assignment for two semesters at the Institute for German Studies, Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies. With this form of author support, the Art Foundation intends to build a bridge between science and literature.
