Eckhard Gerber (born October 13, 1938 in Oberhain , Thuringia ) is a German architect and university professor. He runs an international architecture office in Dortmund with additional locations in Berlin, Hamburg, Riyadh and Shanghai.

Life

Eckhard Gerber grew up as a pastor's son with five siblings. Until 1951 he lived with the family in Großenlupnitz near Eisenach, from then until 1957 in Großheringen near Weimar and passed his GDR high school diploma in Apolda in 1957. The Protestant rectory as his spiritual home and the contrary GDR regime as well as the Thuringian landscape have particularly shaped him.

In 1957 he also passed the West Abitur in West Berlin , flew to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1958 and completed his architecture studies at the Technical University of Braunschweig . Immediately after graduating in 1966, Eckhard Gerber started working as a freelance architect together with Manfred Lange under the name “Werkgemeinschaft 66” in Meschede / Sauerland. From 1973 to 1975 he also worked as an assistant at the Harald Deilmann chair at the University of Dortmund . Since 1979 - after the tragic death of his then office partner Dirk Stelljes - he has been the sole owner of the “Gerber Architects” office based in Dortmund. In 1981 he was offered a professorship at the University of Essen for “Basics of design and applied design theory” in the department of architecture and conservation. In 1990 he was offered a position at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal , where he taught "Basics of Design" until 2004 and from 1995 to 1999 he was also the dean of the architecture faculty. From 2004 to 2012 he held the professorship for the teaching area “Basics of Design and Design” in the REM & CPM master’s course at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal. Since 2008 Eckhard Gerber has expanded the office with locations in Hamburg, Berlin, Riyadh and Shanghai with around 180 employees until today. In 2017 he received two visiting professorships in China, at the Harbin Institute of Technology and at the Dalian University of Technology School of Architecture and Fine Art. In 2018, the Federal Association of Medium-Sized Enterprises (BVMW) appointed him to the Economic Senate.

Eckhard Gerber was chairman of the Dortmunder Kunstverein from 1993 to 2010 , member of the design advisory board of the city of Moers until 2009, from 2011 to 2014 member of the design advisory board of the city of Bielefeld, since 1969 member of the Association of German Architects (BDA) and the German Werkbund (DWB). He took part in over 200 judging procedures, including over 120 times as chairman of the jury at national and international competitions.
