In 2000 the former Volksbank Hüls-Tönisvorst eG merged with the former Volksbank Krefeld von 1897 eG to form today's Volksbank Krefeld eG. In order to emphasize the anchoring of the new credit institute in the Krefeld region, the name Volksbank Krefeld eG was chosen. In 2012, Volksbank Brüggen-Nettetal was finally merged with Volksbank Krefeld.

Previous mergers

The predecessor institutes of Volksbank Krefeld eG, Volksbank Hüls-Tönisvorst eG, Volksbank Krefeld von 1897 eG and Volksbank Brüggen-Nettetal eG, also emerged from various merged institutes.

History of Volksbank Hüls-Tönisvorst eG

The Volksbank Hüls-Tönisvorst eG has its origins in the Hüls-Unter-Benrader savings and loan association eGmuH, which was founded on March 8, 1891.

On May 21, 1957, the general assembly voted for the name to be changed to Spar- und Kreditskasse Hüls eGmuH, Hüls near Krefeld. The legal form of the cooperative was transformed into an eGmbH in 1963. The number of members increased from 130 to 460 between 1948 and 1965 (1954: 176; 1960: 260). In 1968 the credit union was able to acquire its own building for the first time. In 1973 the first branch was opened on Krefelder Straße in Hüls.

The cooperative, which has been operating as Raiffeisenbank Hüls eG since 1976, took over the Tönisberg office from Volksbank Kerken eG in 1977. In the same year, construction work began on a new bank building on Tönisberger Strasse, which could be moved into a year later. In 1983 the Raiffeisenbank Hüls merged with the Agricultural Purchasing and Sales Cooperative Hüls eG, founded on March 18, 1921, and with the Volksbank St. Hubert eG. This was founded on June 12, 1891 - in the same year as the Hülser credit cooperative - by 37 residents in Heinrich Greven's inn as St. Hubert's savings and loan association eGmuH. As early as 1925, the St. Hubert credit cooperative took over the rural purchasing and sales cooperative St. Hubert. In that year the credit union had 103 members, in 1948 53 members. In 1928 the name "Verein" was deleted from the company name.

In 1954, the savings and loan fund took part in the newly founded Kreis-Kempener Edelobstzentrale eGmbH, which it finally took over in 1957. One year after the takeover, the cooperative changed its legal form to that of an eGmbH.

Hüls branch of Volksbank Krefeld eG

In 1961 the St. Hubert cooperative took over the neighboring Orbroich cooperative (founded January 29, 1895) and in 1965 the rural purchasing and sales cooperative Kempen-Schmalbroich, which had already taken over the Schmalbroich agricultural cooperative (founded February 28, 1935) in 1950. From 1954 the number of members grew from 108 to 343 in 1965. In 1960 the cooperative had 218 members.

In 1975 the credit cooperative was renamed Volksbank St. Hubert eG. In 1983 the cooperative was renamed Raiffeisen-Volksbank Hüls-St. Hubert around.

In 1992 the Raiffeisen-Volksbank Hüls-St. Hubert the Volksbank Vorst eG and the Volksbank St. Tönis eG. The Volksbank Hüls-Tönisvorst eG was created.

Four years later the merger with Raiffeisenbank Uerding-Fischeln eG followed, which goes back to a cooperative from Uerdingen and in 1987 took over the Spar- und Kreditskasse Fischeln eG founded on July 1, 1904, which on June 1, 1904 as Fischelner Spar- und Loan Fund Association was founded.

The name Volksbank Hüls-Tönisvorst eG was retained.

History of Volksbank Krefeld from 1897 eG

Volksbank Krefeld von 1897 eG has its origins in the Guild Bank eGmbH founded on May 13, 1897. In 1918 the bank changed its name to Bank für Gewerbe und Hausbesitz eGmbH. In 1897 the cooperative had 101 members. The number rose to 742 by 1921. In 1922 the name was changed to Gewerbe- & Handelsbank eGmbH Krefeld.

During the currency reform in 1923, the commercial and commercial bank was the only credit institute in Krefeld that continued to accept customer funds when the Reichsmark was introduced. Between 20 and 25 employees were busy day and night sorting the paper money delivered by the basket. At the same time, the emergency money had to be brought to the place of issue and exchanged for Reichsmarks.

In 1924 the cooperative had 815 members. In 1926/27 the cooperative excluded 67 members because they did not comply with the repeated request to pay the new Goldmark share. Between 1925 (814 members) and 1931 (541 members), the bank lost a third of its customers because many members were unable to meet their statutory obligations. This membership development led to existential difficulties for the cooperative bank, so that the success rate in recruiting new members was decisive for the further development of the cooperative. The credit union directed its advertising to other cooperatives, guilds, house and landowners' associations and retailers. The credit union's advertising campaigns seem to have met with a positive response as the membership has increased. In 1928 the facade of the guild house could already be renewed and the employees were paid a Christmas bonus of half a month's salary. The difficult economic situation presented the cooperative with new challenges in 1929. As a result of the restructuring law of July 29, 1929 - through which Krefeld was enlarged to form the twin town of Krefeld-Uerdingen - the population in the credit cooperative's business area had increased. In order to be able to offer their service to potential new customers, the banking business had to be restructured.

The credit union survived the severe banking crisis of 1931 relatively unscathed. In 1932 the name was expanded with the addition of "Bank und Sparkasse des Mittelstandes". This reflects the increased focus on the savings bank business - in the annual reports of 1933 and 1934 the name "Gewerbe- und Handelsbank eGmbH Krefeld - Sparkasse des Mittelstandes" can be found. In 1936 the addition "Mittelstand" was deleted. In addition, the name “Volksbank” became more and more popular. In 1940 the addition "Sparkasse since 1897" was changed to "Sparbank since 1897" because the association wanted to ban the name "Sparkasse" after the end of the war. In a meeting on October 11, 1940, the board of directors and the supervisory board agreed to delete the suffix immediately.

The actual goal of the Rheinischer Genossenschaftsverband in Cologne, to enforce the name “Volksbank”, did not find a majority in the supervisory board. In 1942 the name was finally changed to Volksbank Krefeld eGmbH. Due to the war, normal business transactions were no longer possible from 1942. The practical implementation of the change of name to “Volksbank” ultimately failed due to the difficulty in obtaining letters and a Volksbank badge for the house lettering. After a bomb attack in 1943, the cooperative had to give up the old representative business premises on Friedrichstrasse. The banking business was initially continued on the premises of the Deutsche Bank. After the American allies moved in, all banking institutions in Krefeld were closed. On March 19, 1945, the military government approved the cooperative's resumption of banking.

In 1949 the cooperative bank moved into a building on Friedrichstrasse, the building of the Städtische Sparkasse opposite the former representative office. On March 21, 1949, the general assembly decided to rebuild the old bank building at Friedrichstrasse 25, in which today's Volksbank Krefeld eG is based. The building was ready for occupancy again in 1956. In 1969 the first office was opened in Gladbacher Straße in the building of the head master of the butchers' guild. In 1975 this branch was relocated to a new building on the corner of Gladbacher Strasse and Buchenstrasse. Two further branches were opened in 1970 in Oppum (Maybachstrasse) and in Linn (Hafenstrasse). The opening of the office at Oppumer Strasse and the corner of Florastrasse followed a year later. The Bockum branch (Uerdinger Strasse) began operations on February 21, 1975.

From 1979 to 1983 the bank achieved a balance sheet growth of almost 60 percent (1979: 159.9 million DM; 1983: 255.6 million DM) and an increase in membership of approx. 22 percent (1979: 5,137 members; 1983: 6,275 members ). In 1993 the cooperative bank accounted for DM 214.058 million. The number of members was 5,470.

History of Volksbank Brüggen-Nettetal eG

Volksbank Brüggen-Nettetal eG has its origins in the Lobbericher Savings and Loan Association eGmuH (registered cooperative with unlimited liability), which was founded on January 3, 1895. In addition, the Hinsbecker savings and loan association was founded in 1895 in the legal form of a registered cooperative with unlimited liability. Two months later the association already had 75 members. However, the club also suffered negative times in which it had to fight for its existence.

On November 18, 1896, the Borner savings and loan association eGmuH was founded and had a membership of 63. Six months later the Brachter Savings and Loan Association was founded.

The Breyell savings and loan association was founded in 1897 in the house of the first tenant Theodor Thoneick. The office was located in this building until 1920. When it was founded, there was a preprinted log with gaps in the text, which was probably issued by the Rheinischer Bauern-Kredit-Verein GmbH in Kempen. The First World War had almost no influence on the membership of the Breyeller savings and loan association. In contrast, the First World War is clearly reflected in the balance sheet figures. Income and expenses at the end of the war were about four times as high as at the start of the war. The reason lies in the currency devaluation that has already begun.

By signing the statutes of 25 interested parties, the Leuther savings and loan association eGmuH was formed on November 26th, 1899. In 1900 the citizens of Bruges decided to found the Bruges Savings and Loan Association eGmuH.

On February 6, 1905, the Kaldenkirchen savings and loan association was founded in the Küppers inn on Kehrstrasse.

The Brachter, Brüggener and Borner savings and loan associations were the only ones on site in the first few years and their sphere of activity was limited to members. The savings and loan association Schaag eGmuH was founded in 1913.

On August 29, 1924, laws regulating the monetary system were passed. The Reichsmark became the new currency unit in Germany. Most of the cooperative banks no longer had their own assets and were left with no outside funds. Although the central cooperative funds had to start all over again, they tried to help their members, albeit on steep terms.

Around 1920 the company name was changed due to the changed legal form from "Spar- und Loankassen-Verein" to "Spar- und Loankasse". For example, in 1923, at the general assembly of the Lobbericher savings and loan association, the name change to “Lobbericher Bank eGmuH zu Lobberich” was decided. Furthermore, at the general assembly of the Savings and Loan Fund Bracht around 1928, a new name for the company “Savings and Loan Fund eGmuH zu Bracht Niederrhein” was adopted with a unanimous majority.

In 1955 the name “Spar- und Loankasse” was changed to “Raiffeisenkasse”.

In 1969, the merger of the Raiffeisenkasse Brüggen into the savings and loan association Born opened the way for the mergers of cooperative banks on the Lower Rhine. The company agreed on the name Spar- und Kreditbank Brüggen-Born.

Around 1970 the Spar- und Kreditbank eGmbH Breyell merged, as already anticipated, with the Spar- und Kreditkasse Bracht eGmbH to form the Spar- und Kreditbank Nettetal. Six years later, the savings and loan fund Schaag eG joined this.

At the general assembly on November 8, 1974, the previous savings and loan company, Hinsbeck eGmbH, traded as the savings and loan association, Hinsbeck eG, Nettetal. Merger talks with neighboring credit unions took place as early as 1975. In 1976, the Hinsbeck general assembly approved the merger with the savings and loan association Lobberich eG. The new company is now: Volksbank Nettetal eG. In 1977 this merged with the Leuther Spar- und Kreditkasse eGmbH. The upcoming competition, on June 2, 1989, the savings and credit bank Brüggen-Born merged with the savings and credit bank Nettetal. Both banks agreed on the name of the Spar- und Kreditbank Brüggen-Nettetal eG. The main focus of the activities of Spar- und Kreditbank Brüggen-Nettetal eG is the regional market, but this should not close the view of markets beyond that. The first step was taken with the merger of Raiffeisenbank Nettetal eG (Kaldenkirchen) in 1997. This was followed in 1999 by the merger of the Institutes Hinsbeck, Leuth and Lobberich to form Volksbank Brüggen-Nettetal eG.

Commitment and social responsibility

The approaches of the cooperative banks go back to the principles of self-help, self-responsibility and self-administration of Franz Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch and Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen from the middle of the 19th century. Characterized by this cooperative idea, Volksbank Krefeld eG is committed to social projects in the region as well as to art, culture, sport, youth and leisure.
