Wilfried Hagebölling

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilfried Hagebölling (born June 9, 1941 in Berlin ) is a German sculptor and draftsman who is particularly known for his constructive, accessible steel work.

Life

Hagebölling studied from 1963 to 1967 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Robert Jacobsen . He took part in the international sculpture symposia in the cities of Soest (1973) and Homburg-Saar (1974). From 1977 to 1986 he was a lecturer at the University of Paderborn , Department of Architecture / Landscape Management. On the edge of the Senne near Paderborn , he opened his own sculpture garden in 2002, which is open to the public on the first Sunday of every month in summer. Not least for lived values such as solidarity and moral courage, Hagebölling was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia on December 7, 2012.

Hagebölling lives and works in Paderborn. He is a member of the German Association of Artists .

Hagebölling's early interest in architecture, especially in the interplay of architecture and sculpture, is evident in a number of architecture-related works such as the design of a concrete wall at the secondary school in Sundern (1968/69) or the design of a 25 × 25 m light ceiling made of concrete in the new building of the Sparkasse zu Arnsberg (1973/74).

A recurring theme in Hagebölling's sculptural work is the breaking of right angles . First of all, there are spatial structures, composed of square steels, arches, angles, frames and the most varied of surface shapes, struggling to achieve a balance in the overall composition. At the beginning of the 1980s, the shapes became more reduced, more flat and larger. In the case of the “floor pieces” and “space aisles”, the parts of several steel plates bent up at right angles cut through the room sharply, while at the same time they seem to have grown together in the floor.

From the mid-1980s onwards, architectural sculptures, accessible “tunnels”, “passages” and “cloisters” made of steel that block views, restrict access, define lines and channel movement. His “ Wedge Piece ” (1987), a four-meter-high sculpture made of around 20 tons of steel, was commissioned by the city of Minden for the Martinikirchhof. Later the city wanted to have the work of art removed again - not least because of displeasure among the population about the bulky piece. In a first judgment in 2001, the Bielefeld Regional Court approved the work of art for scrapping. However, the Hamm Higher Regional Court, later called on, overturned this decision in an appeal: the work of art must not be set up or stored in any other location without the consent of the artist, as this would impair or distort the work of art. The trend-setting ruling strengthened the artist's copyright against property rights in disputes about art in public spaces.

In the 1990s, Hagebölling increasingly turned to drawing. A larger bundle of drawings by the artist is in the possession of the Städtische Galerie am Abdinghof, Paderborn. Political works such as B. Abu-Ghureib (2003/2004), an intervention in public space as a protest against the degrading treatment of people and against torture. Abu-Ghraib made reference to the torture of Iraqi inmates in Abu-Ghraib prison by US guards, which has caused a worldwide stir. On October 30, 2004, Hagebölling set up a cage measuring 312 × 132 × 235 cm on the grounds of the former Jesuit college on Kamp - today the schoolyard of the Theodorianum high school - in the center of Paderborn. A sign stated:

"Abu-Ghureib 2003/2004 - Friedrich von Spee 1631/1632
The ad hoc intervention in public space is a protest against torture. The work presents an isolation cell as used by US troops for Abu Ghraib prisoners in Baghdad - one to one - at the place of origin of the 'cautio criminalis' (1631/1632) of Friedrich von Spee, on the site of the former Jesuit college. "

Leaflets in shops and churches as well as a press release informed the population. This started a public discussion in the course of which Hagebölling was asked by the mayor, the headmistress and the head of school to remove the work. To delay the removal of labor, Hagebölling also spent a night in the cage himself. Later, for security reasons, the cage was largely sealed off with barriers and finally, in agreement with the city, moved onto the sidewalk (public space). Hagebölling picked up the work on November 29th. The place that Hagebölling chose for this intervention is reminiscent of Friedrich Spee , who taught at this Jesuit college from 1623 to 1626 and from 1629 to 1631. In his book Cautio Criminalis or Legal Concerns about the Witch Trials , which appeared anonymously in 1631, he committedly condemned torture and forced confessions. This book contributed significantly to the abolition of torture in Germany.
