The Daniel-Pöppelmann-Haus is a municipal museum with an art association in the East Westphalian city of Herford in North Rhine-Westphalia . The museum is named after the Herford-born architect Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann .

location

The Daniel-Pöppelmann-Haus is located in Radewig not far from the Gänsemarkt . The museum garden, in which the building stands, was laid out on the remains of a roundabout , a former bastion of the city fortifications. The area is surrounded by the city moat to the south and west. To the east runs the Deichtorwall, part of the ramparts that surround Herford city center, and to the north of the building there is an extension of the Brudtlachtstrasse, where the entrance to the house is located. A bridge over the city moat leads to the Herford district administration . At the entrance and in the museum garden there are various columns and sculptures that are described in the article Monuments and art in public space in Herford .

description

The museum complex consists of the late Classicist Villa Schönfeld with a permanent exhibition on the history of the city and a modern extension made of exposed concrete , which is mainly used for changing art exhibitions. Villa Schönfeld has been a listed building since 1982, the extension since 2007.

Villa Schönfeld was built between 1874 and 1876 for the textile manufacturer Heinrich Schönfeld. In 1940 the building was sold by the Schönfeld family to the city of Herford. In 1941, the city of Herford left the villa to the “Herford Association for Local History” in order to re-establish the city museum with a collection on the city's history. A modern extension was added to the museum between 1974 and 1975. The extension was designed by the architect Dieter Oesterlen and has since been used primarily by the “Herford Art Association” for exhibitions and lectures. The museum villa and the extension have been called Daniel-Pöppelmann-Haus since 1975 .

From 2004 to 2013 Villa Schönfeld was closed for renovation work. The building has been open to the public again since the end of May 2013. The new permanent exhibition on the city's history was opened in April 2016.

In July 2014 Villa Schönfeld was named Monument of the Month in Westphalia-Lippe .
