The Minden Museum was opened in the East Westphalian city of Minden in 1922 . The museum houses extensive collections on the history, regional and folklore of the former Minden monastery and today's Minden-Lübbecke district . After extensive reconstruction of the building, it was reopened in October 2012 for the 100th anniversary and now houses an exhibition on the 1200-year history of the city of Minden and an area for special exhibitions.

history

The city council of Minden decided on September 26, 1912 to found the museum in order to bring together various collections. The museum is housed in old merchants' houses, the so-called Museumzeile, in the upper old town of Minden. The former bookstore Körber & Freytag at Ritterstraße 23 was rebuilt to found the museum. The First World War led to delays, so that the house was not open to the public until September 22, 1922. In the years 1953 to 1959, the two neighboring houses No. 25 and 27 were added under the museum director Otto-Kurt Laag . This means that the Minden Museum is housed in a row of houses that exemplifies the architectural style of the Weser Renaissance .

In these houses, the Minden Museum presents its exhibitions on 1000 square meters. The basis of the collected exhibits are the remains of the Minden District Museum, which was founded in 1909 on the initiative of District Administrator Franz Cornelsen (1906–1917) and which became part of the Minden Museum.

The museum was reopened on October 7, 2012 after renovation.

The buildings of the museum are entered in the list of monuments of the city of Minden .

The museum is supported by the Society for the Promotion of the Minden Museum .

Name of the museum

The museum previously operated under the name Mindener Museum für Geschichte, Landes- und Volkskunde . For the reorganization after the renovation, the annex was omitted and from now on it is only called Minden Museum .
