The Glaskasten Sculpture Museum is an art museum in Marl , the focus of the collection on sculptures of classical modernism and contemporary art .

history

Town hall in Marl , on the left the sculpture museum.

The industrial city of Marl began to rebuild after 1945. To do this, she engaged some internationally recognized architects for urban construction projects, such as B. Hans Scharoun for the new school building, Johannes Hendrik van den Broek and Jacob Bakema for the town hall. The meeting room of the town hall is located on the upper floor of what is now the museum building. A small percentage of the construction cost was used for art purchases. The city of Marl gradually acquired a collection of works of art by renowned artists, mainly from the 20th century, as well as some large sculptures and a number of small sculptures. In 1978 the city of Marl hired the art historian Uwe Rüth to maintain and expand the collection. In 1982 the Sculpture Museum Glaskasten was officially founded, Rüth became the first museum director and the exhibition area was steadily enlarged. In 1990 the city's Paracelsus Clinic became part of the museum.

In the Corona crisis 2020 , the sculpture museum is showing the sound art exhibition "sound + space" by Johannes S. Sistermanns and Pierre-Laurent Cassère . The mayor of Marl Werner Arndt said: “Our museum may be closed at the moment, but art can still be enjoyed”.

The collection

Ansgar Nierhoff , polyhedron, Marl

The focus is on sculptures from classical modernism and contemporary art as well as three-dimensional works such as objects and installations. The collection includes artists such as B. Auguste Rodin , Timm Ulrichs , Constantin Meunier , Alberto Giacometti and Max Ernst .

Sculpture park

The objects are distributed over the entire city area. Including sculptures by Hans Arp and Richard Serra to Ossip Zadkine . The closer the visitor gets to the main building of the Glaskasten Sculpture Museum, the denser the number of objects. In the glass-enclosed building of the museum, visitors will find large sculptures that are not suitable for outdoor exhibitions, but also small sculptures and objects, for example by Alberto Giacometti .

Exhibitions (selection)

Sharma for his installation “wieder und nie”, Johannes S. Sistermanns for his work “durchlisten” and Jan-Peter ER Sonntag for his sound volume project “PNEUMA”.
