Portrait of Uwe Rüth (2010)

Uwe Max Rüth (* 1942 in Breslau ) is a retired German art historian and museum director.

Live and act

Rüth studied art history, archeology and prehistory and early history at the University of Bonn . In 1976 he received his doctorate at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Bonn on the subject of color in Byzantine wall painting of the late palaeological epoch (1341-1453) . In 1978 he was hired by the city of Marl to maintain and expand the city's collection of large sculptures in public spaces, but also a number of small sculptures. Even back then, the collection consisted for the most part of works by renowned artists of the 20th century and had been financed with funds from an art-in-building scheme to which the city had committed itself in 1954. Under the meeting wing of the town hall, rooms for the presentation of the small sculptures were gradually set up. In 1982 the sculpture museum Glaskasten of the city of Marl was officially founded; Rüth became its director. Since then, the exhibition space and the inventory have increased significantly. As with the works of art outside, the concept includes openness and transparency for everyone; so the small sculptures and objects in the glass-enclosed interior are always visible.

Rüth was the founder of the Marler Media Art Prize, which has been awarded since 1984, with the Marler Video Art Prize, the oldest German prize for this genre. From 1994 to 1997 Rüth was the artistic director of Triennale Ruhr GmbH, Essen. In 2001 he initiated the German Sound Art Prize together with Karl Karst . He was released into retirement in 2007 as museum director. In 2010, Rüth was the city of Marl's representative for the RUHR.2010 project - European Capital of Culture .

Rüth is the author of numerous publications and gives lectures at home and abroad. He lives in Cologne .
