German Sound Art Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Sound Art Prize is an award sponsored by WDR 3 , INITIATIVE HÖREN and the Sculpture Museum Glaskasten Marl for artistically outstanding, spatial sound creations.

Goal setting

The German Sound Art Prize is awarded to artistic works that specifically deal with space-related sound and form creations. In addition to the artistic quality, the convincing acoustic and plastic form security is a criterion for the assessment. The German Sound Art Prize has set itself the task of stimulating and supporting the further development of this genre through the implementation of newly developed artistic concepts. At the same time, through critical observation, an attempt is made to analyze, follow and question the further development of the genre. Another aim of the award is to give sound art a greater role in the reception and exhibition of art. In addition, the aim is to increase the importance of the acoustic environment and the acoustic space and, in the broadest sense, the competence of hearing through the mediation of the German Sound Art Prize.

Emergence

The German Sound Art Prize, awarded for the first time in 2002, has its origins in the founding of INITIATIVE HÖREN on March 2, 2001 and the meeting of the initiators, Karl Karst , director of the cultural radio WDR 3 , and Uwe Rüth , director of the Sculpture Museum Glaskasten Marl. Since then, WDR 3, the Sculpture Museum Glaskasten Marl and the Hören Initiative, supported by sponsors and partners such as the Kunststiftung NRW and the Habakuk Friends of the Sculpture Museum Glaskasten Marl, have awarded the German Sound Art Prize every two years in Marl.

SoundART

During ART COLOGNE 2004, a separate SoundART exhibition presented the winners and nominees of the German Sound Art Prize for the first time. In connection with sound performances by the Studio Akustische Kunst and the Studio for Electronic Music of the WDR, they were given the opportunity to present excerpts from their oeuvre to a large audience.

Catalog + DVD

A catalog is published for the German Sound Art Prize, which is available from the Sculpture Museum Glaskasten Marl. The first two competitions and the SoundART exhibitions in 2004 and 2005 are documented on a free DVD from cultural radio WDR 3.
