Johannes S. Sistermanns (born October 9, 1955 in Cologne ) is a German composer and sound artist.

biography

From 1976 to 1984 Sistermanns studied rhythmics with Holmrike Leiser at the Cologne University of Music and Dance , piano / piano improvisation with Klaus Runze and composition and 'new music theater' with Mauricio Kagel . In 1977 he took singing lessons in North Indian raga music with Jyotishi Chitteranjan at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and with Pandit TL Rana and Shrimati Kalpana Chatterjee in Kolkatta. 1979–1981 he also learned overtone singing from Jochen Vetter. 1981–82 Composition seminar with Juan Allende-Blin and Prof. Klaus Schöning WDR Cologne 'Studio Akustische Kunst'. In 1984/85 he studied philosophy with Friedrich-Wilhelm von Herrmann , Martin Heidegger's last private assistant at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . In 1989 Sistermanns received his doctorate in musicology at the University of Osnabrück with Hans Christian Schmidt-Banse on "Media-specific directing concepts for the visualization of opera on television" IMZ Internationales Musikzentrum Wien . 1993–1996 he also studied singing with Stephen Cheng in New York using his method "The Tao of Voice - East-Western Approach".

From 1977 onwards he spent longer periods of work and fellowships in the USA, North India, Australia, Japan and the PR China. He lived in Paris 1991/92 with a scholarship from the Stiftung Kunst und Kultur, Düsseldorf, today Kunststiftung NRW , where he met Luc Ferrari , in New York 1995/96, Adelaide / Melbourne 1997/2000 Individual artist scholarship Ministry of Culture NRW and Kyoto / Kyoto Tokyo 2001 artist grant ( Japan Foundation ).

In 1993 he was a founding member and board member of the transition room eV in Cologne. 1997-2010 he acted as 2nd chairman of the DEGEM German Society for Electroacoustic Music .

He was also a founding member of the Academy for West-Eastern Dialogue of Cultures in 2019 . Since 2019 Sistermanns has been a delegate of the Society for New Music GNM in the German Cultural Council Berlin.

Artistic practice

His work consists of an installation sound plastic, audio piece and electro-acoustic composition for 2-8 / 43 [Klangdom ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe] up to 2704 loudspeakers of wave field synthesis (electronic studio) TU Berlin , live satellite / internet / sound Performance, graphic notation and instrumental composition. At the beginning of the 2000s, based on the idea of a 'sound installation', he developed the concept of KlangPlastik as a multi-media spatial process that no longer uses conventional loudspeakers. Instead, since 1997 he has been transmitting his compositions using piezo loudspeakers and transducers directly to resonant room walls, windows, everyday material and analog musical instruments themselves, as in "UNSTRUMENT" for symphony orchestra, premiered by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Luxembourg at the "rainy days" festival in 2012, Philharmonic Luxembourg . The instruments of the symphony orchestra are played and resonate without a musician playing the instruments on stage.

Sistermanns does not exclude any medium, place, material, space, instrument and impulse in order to include all meaningful media in his art practice.

Here he acts from a potential space. It is no longer the limits of the material composition of instruments or spaces that are constitutive for this potential space, but rather the informational power of the individual's perception.
