Thomas Köner (* 1965 in Bochum ) is a German sound and multimedia artist . In his works, Köner often combines visual and auditory experiences.

Life

Köner studied electronic music at the CEM studio in Arnhem from 1985 to 1990. From 1987 to 1992 he studied at a conservatory in Dortmund.

In 1990 his first album Nunatak Gongamur was released on the Dutch label Barooni. In 1992 and 1993 the albums Teimo and Permafrost were also released on Barooni . Both albums were re-released as a compilation by the German label Mille Plateaux in 1997 , making them accessible to a wider audience. Together with Nunatak , another compilation of the first three albums was released on the Type label in 2010.

Between 1992 and 1994, Köner was employed by RuhrSound Studios in Dortmund. He has been working as a freelance artist since 1995.

In 1996, Köner contributed, alongside Paul Schütze , Pete Namlook , Anton Fier , Haruomi Hosono , Mick Harris and Tetsu Inoue, a piece for the album Distill of the Bill Laswell project Divination . With the musician Andy Mellwig , Köner released a series of style-defining dub-techno releases on labels such as Chain Reaction , Mille Plateaux and Force Inc. Music Works under the project name Porter Ricks between 1996 and 1999 . The album The Köner Experiment , published in 1997 by the Experimental Audio Research group (Andy Mellwig, Eddie Prévost , Kevin Martin , Kevin Shields , Pete Kember ) took up his name in the title and was also sonically related to his own minimal techno drafts ( Minimal Techno ).

Together with the sound artist Asmus Tietchens , he founded the project Kontakt der Jünglinge, which has released several albums and EPs since 2001.

His video Banlieue du Vide (“Suburb of Emptiness”) was created from wintry recordings from surveillance cameras, which Köner slowly faded over without cuts and accompanied with drones and field recordings . The video received the Golden Nica in the Digital Music & Sound Art category at the 2004 Prix ​​Ars Electronica .
