Bandcamp is an online music service and promotion platform aimed particularly at independent artists. Artists at Bandcamp have a modifiable microsite with the albums they upload. Many titles can be played free of charge on the website. Artists can determine whether music downloads are free or chargeable or linked to the specification of an email address. Bandcamp takes a 15% stake in sales on the site, with the stake dropping to 10% after taking in more than $ 5,000 through sales. Participation in Bandcamp is free.

When downloading the music, customers can choose between the formats MP3 with a constant bit rate of 320 kbit / s, MP3 with a variable bit rate, FLAC , AAC , Ogg Vorbis with a constant bit rate of 192 kbit / s, WAV and ALAC . The upload is possible in the formats WAV, AIFF or FLAC.

history

The idea for Bandcamp came in 2007 after Ethan Diamond, the website's founder, had a frustrating experience trying to download a band's self- released album. He then left his previous employer, Yahoo, and founded Bandcamp in 2008.

Bandcamp received attention in July 2010 when Amanda Palmer , Low Places and Bedhed gave up their respective record labels and started selling their albums on Bandcamp, promoting it on Twitter . Amanda Palmer earned $ 15,000 on Bandcamp within three minutes of the release of the EP Amanda Palmer Performs the Popular Hits of Radiohead on Her Magical Ukulele . Also Sufjan Stevens uses Bandcamp sales of his albums; he reached the Billboard 200 charts with the EP All Delighted People solely through sales at Bandcamp .

The website gained popularity in 2011 when some indie game developers released the soundtracks of their games on Bandcamp. These included Bastion , Sanctum, Machinarium , Terraria , Plants Against Zombies , Limbo , Super Meat Boy , To the Moon and Minecraft . In December 2011, the website had revenue of $ 1 million for the first time in a month. In 2016, Bandcamp made public for the first time how much money they had paid out to the artists listed on it since the website was founded: the total was around $ 150 million. After Donald Trump had issued the entry ban for citizens from seven predominantly Muslim countries , Bandcamp started a fundraising campaign: On February 3, 2017, the company donated 100 percent of its income to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), around 400 labels and artists Bandcamp followed suit. A total of almost 100,000 US dollars were donated.

Distribution opportunities

At Bandcamp, the artists can determine exactly how the fans can get their music. The first differentiation criterion is whether a download is possible at all. If this is desired, it can also be done free of charge. A contingent of 200 free downloads per month is available for this. For every US $ 500 in sales, the quota is increased by 1,000 downloads. Additional downloads can be purchased for 1.5 to 3 US cents. Optionally, the free download can be linked to the specification of a valid e-mail address to which the download link will be sent. Download codes can also be generated and assigned according to the same scheme. In addition to setting a fixed price, it is also possible to let the buyer determine how much he would like to pay. A minimum amount can be set here. The downloads can be supplemented with bonus material such as photos and videos. Fan articles can also be offered for which the pricing is analogous to the downloads.

Bandcamp also supports Creative Commons licenses. For each uploaded piece of music, one of the six 3.0 licenses can be selected in addition to "All rights reserved". A combination of different licenses can also be used.
