Minecraft is an open world game (originally an indie open world game) that was created by the Swedish programmer Markus “Notch” Persson and by his company Mojang , which was sold in September 2014 for 2.5 billion dollars (about 1.9 Billion euros) was bought up by the Microsoft group, was published and is still being developed today. The game was first released on May 17, 2009 for PC , but was still in the development phase, which included the alpha and beta as well as a few other versions. Mojang released additional versions for iOS , Android and the Raspberry Pi . The game was ported to various game consoles in cooperation with 4J Studios . Almost all newer versions of Minecraft receive regular updates . Minecraft has been sold over 200 million times on all platforms, making it the best-selling video game worldwide.

In the video game , the player can build constructions from mostly cube-shaped blocks in a 3D world. In addition, the player can explore this world, collect resources, fight against monsters and process the blocks into other items.

    Gameplay

Minecraft is an open world game without a fixed goal. The main focus is on exploring and discovering the game world with its caves and dungeons as well as building your own buildings and devices. The player can mine raw materials ("mine"), process them into other objects ("craft") and fight against monsters . However, the game provides a number of tasks (so-called "progress") which, among other things, are intended to facilitate the introduction to the game. Minecraft defaults from the first-person view , but with the possibility, in the third-person perspective to change played. The player can move freely in the Minecraft game world. It is generated procedurally and, in the Java edition, is practically infinite (but from version 1.7.9 it is limited to a frame of 60 million blocks in width to prevent problems with floating point calculations; however, the world can still be viewed as infinite) . The worlds in all other versions are spatially limited. Any number of different worlds can be saved. These consist for the most part of cube-shaped blocks with a side length of one virtual meter, which are arranged in a grid. The blocks each consist of a material such as earth, wood or various ores .

Almost all blocks are degradable and can be added to the inventory . They can be dropped off almost anywhere in the world. Blocks can also be combined in different variations and thus enable the construction of tools, weapons and armor, among other things. Combining the objects is a central aspect in Minecraft and is called crafting . The starting materials have to be arranged in a production field according to a certain pattern so that a certain object is created from it. For example, a chest can be made from an O-shaped pattern of wooden boards. Since version 1.12 there is a recipe book, which is supposed to facilitate the production for the players.

Minecraft has an inventory system, so the player can carry a maximum of 36 different stacks of items of between 1, 16 and 64 units depending on the item. Upon death, all items in the inventory are dropped. After Respawn a player they can be collected again within a limited time (5 minutes). Experience points can be gained by killing monsters or animals, by burning ores and stones in the furnace and mining ores. With the experience points tools, armor and weapons can be enchanted or repaired by an anvil and renamed. Enchanted items are usually stronger, last longer, or have other effects.

The laws of physics are partially canceled in the game. For example, most blocks are not subject to gravity during construction , but appear to float weightlessly. Water and lava are the only liquids. They can flow and have a source. This can be permanently removed by placing a solid block in its place or by using a bucket to remove the source block. Circuits can be built using redstone dust. This is similar to conductor tracks and is able to transmit signals. For example, a switch to open a door can be built; and even a simple processor can be recreated in Minecraft .

    Game world

When the game starts, the player is placed in the game world. The accessible terrain consists of mountains, forests, deserts, seas, plains and caves. The world is divided into different biomes , ranging from deserts, oceans and primeval forests to fields of snow. The game has a twenty-minute day-night cycle. The player encounters different non-player characters (NPCs) such as animals, villagers and monsters. Peaceful animals such as pigs, sheep or chickens serve as raw material sources for, for example, meat or wool. During the night and in dark areas, hostile creatures such as zombies, spiders, exploding creepers or skeletons armed with a bow and arrow appear. You can also encounter pre-generated villages in which villagers live. They can be traded with.

There are three dimensions in total in Minecraft :

    The upper world
The upper world is the dimension in which the player starts and also spends most of the time. It is comparable to the real world (trees, lakes, etc.). There you will also find various raw materials that will be needed in the later game (e.g. wood, stone, ores , water, food, etc.)
    The nether
The nether is a hell-like dimension that can only be reached through nether portals . With the help of raw materials only available in the Nether, you can create a boss, the Wither. There are also different monsters in the Nether than in the overworld. These are generally stronger than those in the overworld and can appear all the time as there is no time of day in the Nether. The Nether is also more challenging because it is full of lava that can kill the player and lose inventory.
    The end
The end is a dimension in which one can defeat an end boss , the ender dragon. You can only reach this through an end portal, which is located in a fortress. There are a total of 128 fortresses in the entire upper world. When the dragon has been defeated, the player is rewarded with experience points, at the same time the end portal, with which one can leave the end, is activated, and an end transit portal appears. If you jump into the end portal, there are credits written by the Irish author Julian Gough, but they do not end the game. If the player throws an ender bead into the end transit portal, he will be teleported to another end transit portal approx. 1000 blocks away. At this distance there are many side islands on which there are end settlements and end ships. However, these islands float in the middle of nowhere (in English it is called a void) into which one can fall, whereby the player character is killed (under -64 blocks the player suffers damage) and is transferred back to the overworld. The final transit portal is surrounded by indestructible bedrock and can therefore not be entered directly. Instead, one has to throw in an Ender Pearl to travel through it, fly through it with Elytres, or crawl / swim through it.
The end is directly related to the so-called endermen, which can appear in all three dimensions. They can teleport and will only attack a player if he attacks him or looks him in the eye. Endermen are also one of two creatures who break down blocks and can thus actively change the game world (not just passively through explosions).

    Modes

There are five game modes in Minecraft . A distinction is made between the survival mode , the hardcore mode , which is a special variant of the survival mode , the creative mode , which is best suited for creating large structures, and the adventure mode , which is used for playing so-called adventure maps created by other players and available for download, and spectator mode . You can choose between four levels of difficulty . In this way, the appearance of monsters can also be completely switched off. All game modes can be played in single and multiplayer modes.

On the server side, Minecraft only knows four game modes: survival mode, creative mode, adventure mode and spectator mode. The hardcore mode is technically the same as the survival mode.

    Creative mode

Since the Java edition Beta 1.8 there is the creative mode , in which the player is provided with unlimited amounts of resources and items in the inventory. It is also possible to fly and dismantle blocks immediately. In addition, the player cannot suffer any damage or get hungry, which simplifies the creation of large and complicated structures.

    Survival mode

In survival mode there is a health bar that z. B. is used up by attacks from monsters, falls, suffocation or drowning. The player also has a hunger indicator, which must be replenished at regular intervals by consuming various foods (meat, bread, etc.). The strength of the armor that is being worn is also shown in a display below.

Due to the twenty-minute change between day and night, the player is initially forced to build a safe hiding place for the night. By building beds in safe places, it is possible to skip the night and avoid confrontations with zombies and other monsters. Since certain raw materials are only given by killed monsters, it is sometimes necessary to seek a confrontation with the opponents or to lure them into self-constructed traps. For example, Ender eyes can only be made after Endermen and Lohen have been killed in order to get the Ender pearls and Lohen rods required for them from them.

    Adventure mode

Adventure mode was added with Java Edition 1.3 . This mode is similar to survival mode . Blocks can only be placed to a limited extent and can only be dismantled with a tool provided for this purpose. In the beginning you can't put or take down blocks or use tools. However, this can be modified with so-called commands. However, the player can interact with objects such as boxes and buttons without restriction.

The mode is designed for worlds created by other players. The creator can thus determine which items are available to the player of the game created in Minecraft and how they can be interacted with. In this way, players can create their own worlds and game modes in which, for example, they can only fight against other players. Another addition designed for custom worlds is the command block. It enables the creators to use commands to influence other things, such as teleporting players or deactivating fires.

    Hardcore mode

Since the Java edition 1.0 there is the hardcore mode, a special form of the survival mode in which the difficulty level cannot be reduced from the highest and the player cannot be resuscitated in the event of death. This mode is only playable in the Java edition.

    Spectator mode

Since the Java edition 1.8 there is the spectator mode, in which the player cannot interact with the game world. However, the player can fly through blocks, players and creatures and, moreover, compare his camera perspective with that of other players and creatures. This mode is only playable in the Java edition.

    Multiplayer

The multiplayer mode enables several players to play and communicate together in one world. Some multiplayer servers have certain rules or competitions that a wide variety of players can participate in. There are, for example, some which the Deadly Games similar (Hunger Games) or Battlefield. Furthermore, PvP can be activated.

Everyone is allowed to run a server that is free for players. In order to join a server, the IP address or the Internet address and the port (by default 25565) of the desired server must be known. Since version 1.3, single-player worlds have been running as separate servers, so that it is possible to play together with other players in a local area network . To further improve the support of the multiplayer mode, the development team of the unofficial modification Bukkit was hired on February 28, 2012 at Mojang . There are hosting providers who provide preconfigured Minecraft servers for a fee (usually monthly).

About server modifications such as B. Spigot, Bukkit or CanaryMod, Minecraft servers can be expanded with additional functionalities. This is done via plugins on the server. Functions such as protecting areas from change, implementing an economic system or assigning authorizations to individual players are often provided. So-called mini - games are also implemented with the help of plugins . It is also possible to use programs such as B. BungeeCord to quickly switch between multiple servers. Huge server networks with several thousand players who are online at the same time have emerged. The Minecraft servers with the most players are Hypixel and Mineplex and in German-speaking countries GommeHD.net . Many large Minecraft servers are now operated commercially, in that special ranks and items can be bought for real money.

    Minecraft Realms

Mojang offers Minecraft servers under the name Minecraft Realms . The servers are each assigned to a user who can control the server. The service has been available worldwide since May 2014. After a 30-day test phase, the service is chargeable.

In contrast to self-hosted Minecraft servers, the Realms servers only offer a limited range of functions, so a maximum of eleven players can play on a Realms server at the same time. No modifications or plug-ins are offered for realms , instead Mojang offers various mini-games created by the community of players that can be loaded into one of the three available world slots.

    development

The Swede Markus "Notch" Persson started developing Minecraft after being inspired by Infiniminer , Dwarf Fortress and Dungeon Keeper . The game was released as a Classic version on May 17, 2009. Persson added more blocks, items, and functions to the game with updates.

To help develop Minecraft , he founded Mojang . The game reached beta on December 20, 2010 . During this time he hired more and more people for Minecraft .

As part of Minecraft - Convention Minecon the beta phase was completed on 18 November 2011th On December 1, 2011, Jens Bergensten took full creative control of Minecraft .

The game is continuously expanded to include new game content and functions, and errors are eliminated. At the end of 2011, Mojang began to publish “snapshots” mostly weekly. These optional trials are released to get feedback and fix bugs.

On July 1, 2013, a new Minecraft launcher was introduced, through which the game can be updated and started. The new launcher brings many new functions compared to the previous versions. For example it is possible to play all old Minecraft versions. However, it is no longer possible to start the game in a web browser .

The integration of the streaming service Twitch into Minecraft was announced at MineCon 2013 . This should allow Minecraft to be streamed directly from the game. This function was introduced with version 1.7.4, but was removed again in version 1.9. Instead, MIXER was introduced by Microsoft as a streaming application.

The music and sound effects are composed by the German composer Daniel Rosenfeld (alias C418 ). A soundtrack called "Minecraft - Volume Alpha" has been available separately since March 4, 2011. The album contains Minecraft's background music and other songs. The paintings that can be used in Minecraft are pixel art variations of oil paintings by Swedish artist Kristoffer Zetterstrand . In November 2013 Rosenfeld released the second soundtrack "Minecraft - Volume Beta".

The game was originally developed in the Java programming language only . This version uses the Lightweight Java Game Library (LWJGL) program library for graphics output . To start the game, you may need a Java runtime environment from version 6 (in some cases the runtime environment is supplied with the launcher).

In addition, Minecraft - Pocket Edition (Bedrock Edition) , published in October 2011, was written in the C ++ programming language. All new editions such as Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition are based on this version of Minecraft .

The console edition such as Xbox 360, PS3, PS Vita and Wii U were also developed in the C ++ programming language. An official virtual reality version of the game was released on August 15, 2016 for the Oculus Rift and later ported to other virtual reality headsets .

Since 2017, all Minecraft versions except the Java Edition have been published and further developed as Bedrock Edition . This enables cross-platform games ( cross-play ) between the various platforms as part of the Better Together update, such as PC, smartphone and game console. On October 6, 2018, parts of the Java code were released as open source .

A ray tracing version of the game called Minecraft RTX (named after the Nvidia GeForce 20 series of graphics cards ) started its beta phase in April 2020.

    history

Detailed information on the development of Minecraft can be found on the Minecraft Wiki . This list is not intended to be exhaustive with regard to upcoming updates. Innovations regarding the Marketplace (skins, texturepacks) are not listed.

Minecraft Classic was the oldest version and was available online for free until September 2015. If alpha versions are made available in the settings, the classic version can still be played via the launcher .

    Expandability

There is a wide variety of user-generated content for Minecraft , such as modifications, skins, texture packs and custom maps.

Texture packs adjust the graphical representation of the game. With the final Java edition 1.6, texture packages were replaced by resource packages. In addition to the textures, these can also be used to adjust the music and sound effects. The most popular modifications also include so-called shaders , which significantly improve the graphics of the game and insert shadows, different incidence of light or even moving leaves on the trees, which is not included in the unmodified game.

Modifications , called mods, add a variety of gameplay changes to the game. These range from new blocks or new items to new monsters and complex simulations. This also includes mods that offer the user programming options. Jens Bergensten announced that in the future it will be easier to install mods via resource packages and program them with a plugin API . Compilations of mods are offered in modpacks on external launchers such as the Technic Launcher , ATL Launcher or Feed-the-Beast- Launcher and usually add technical and fantasy elements to the game.

Adventure maps created by other players are also available. They often contain rules, challenges, puzzles, and tasks. Finished worlds are mostly shared in the Minecraft forum . In the final version 1.4 Mojang added special content for these worlds. Below that are the command blocks and the adventure mode .

There are now over 100 languages on the Java edition. Among them are fantasy languages like a pirate language. The players can change the language files themselves or add new languages. These language extensions were unofficially available before and were called "language packs". There are currently almost 30 languages on the Bedrock edition. There is also a text-to-speech system that converts the running text into acoustic speech output during the game.

The console version supports DLCs , which are available from the online store of the respective game console. They contain different skins, texture packs and worlds for the Battle Mini Games. There are also so-called “mash-up packs” that can contain worlds, sounds, music and another user interface. However, these are not free and can be purchased via the Nintendo eShop, the Microsoft Store or the PlayStation Store. In contrast to the Java edition, this version does not support mods.

With the Bedrock edition, the marketplace was added, through which texture packs, skin packs, worlds and mash-up packs with “Minecoins” can be bought. The purchased content can be downloaded and used across platforms. Cross -platform games (so-called crossplay ) have also been possible since then.

Add-ons can be installed on the Bedrock Edition.

The Minecraft servers often use plugins to map mini-games and role-playing game elements.

Minecraft's Java edition received mostly positive reviews from critics. The open world and the freedom of the players are praised. Criticism was mainly due to the lack of a tutorial, so new players cannot find their way into the game. At Metacritic she received 93%, based on 33 ratings from specialist magazines.

In a May 2010 compilation of browser games by PC Gamer , Minecraft was placed in the top ten. In the popular British computer game blog Rock, Paper, Shotgun , the game was described as perhaps the biggest indie hit of 2010 during a Minecraft week in September 2010 .

At the Independent Games Festival 2011, Minecraft won the Seumas McNally Grand Prize and the Player-Determined Audience Award . Also in 2011 Minecraft won the Game Developers Choice Awards for Best Debut Game , Best Downloadable Game and Innovations Prize.

The Xbox 360 Edition was also mostly rated positively, but not as good as the Java Edition. This was mostly justified by the missing functions compared to this one. At Metacritic, she received 82 points from 63 specialist magazines.

In 2012, the Xbox Edition of Minecraft won the Golden Joystick Award for Best Downloadable Game .

The Pocket Edition was rated the worst so far. She only got 53 points on Metacritic. In 2013, the few functions in this version compared to the Java edition were also criticized.

The free Minecraft China edition has been downloaded over 300 million times.

    Data security

According to a data analysis, Avast is said to have hidden malware in Minecraft skins , which affects 50 thousand accounts. Malware is mainly spread through fake versions of Minecraft and mods.

    Areas of application

    Minecraft: Education Edition

Minecraft is also used in educational institutions. In 2011 the organization "MinecraftEdu" was founded to give schools access to Minecraft. She is working with Mojang to make the game accessible and affordable for schools. Companies like Google also develop modifications for Minecraft, such as "qCraft" which is compatible with "Minecraft" and "MinecraftEdu". In September 2012, the organization had 250,000 students with access to Minecraft . In a Swedish school the game is compulsory.

Modifications of Minecraft have also been developed for other special training goals . For example, there is the “BeIMCraft” method of building information modeling for training and introducing students to the complex processes of the construction industry . Among other things, this is intended to convey an understanding of time and resource management and sustainable building. This should also help counteract the shortage of skilled workers in the construction industry.

    Non-profit use

Minecraft is also used for humanitarian purposes. In 2012 Mojang started the Block By Block project in cooperation with the United Nations Program for Human Settlements (UNHABITAT). The aim is to give people in developing countries the opportunity to participate in planning their living environment. In the game, suggestions are created that can then be presented to regional decision-makers.

The Reporters Without Borders have published a map in Minecraft with an uncensored library for countries where freedom of the press is restricted but Minecraft is allowed.

    Further effects

    Minecraft on social media

Minecraft became famous through many social media channels such as YouTube , Facebook and Reddit , with a third of Minecraft players learning about the game through online videos. In 2010, Minecraft became more and more popular thanks to the video platform YouTube. Mostly they are let's play videos, creations by players, walkthroughs or parodies. One of the most popular German-speaking Let's Players in the game's heyday was Gronkh . At the end of 2012 there were over 4 million videos about Minecraft on YouTube, in October 2014 there were around 78.2 million videos with the keyword "Minecraft". Also got Mojang offers from Hollywood studios, the TV program wanted to make about the game. In 2019, Minecraft was the most viewed game on YouTube with over 100 billion views.

Events also often take place in Minecraft, such as the live music festival "Electric Blockaloo", which took place from June 25 to 28, 2020. Over 300 artists performed during the festival. The advantage of the events is that, unlike conventional music festivals, they take place online and worldwide, even during the COVID-19 pandemic . In addition, the largest German-language Minecraft project "Craft Attack" takes place every year, which lasts for several weeks and in which 50 well-known YouTubers compete against each other and build competitively.

The game Minecraft established the fictional character " Creeper ." The Creeper is a green, upright creature with four legs that explodes if it comes too close to the player. For example, there are numerous Creeper merchandise items, various fan-produced, often-viewed songs on YouTube and other different creations for Creeper. The silhouette of the creeper is part of the official Minecraft logo and icon of the game, whereby the creeper itself was created simply by a rotation error (the x-axis was confused with the y-axis), so that the desired pig got an upright body.

    documentary

On December 23, 2012 the film Minecraft: The Story of Mojang , realized by 2PlayerProductions , was released. In early 2011, more than $ 210,000 was raised through the crowdfunding portal Kickstarter to fund this documentary about Minecraft . The programmers were accompanied for a whole year for the documentation. The film is available to Xbox Live Gold subscribers free of charge, and it was broadcast there on December 22, 2012.

    References and similar computer games

There are hints of Minecraft in many games , including The Stanley Parable , Torchlight 2 , Borderlands 2 , Super Meat Boy , Skyrim , The Binding of Isaac , Team Fortress 2, and FTL: Faster Than Light , among others . The principle of worlds made up of blocks has been adopted from some games, such as Ace of Spades , Minetest and PixARK .

    museum

The Museum of Modern Art in New York added Minecraft to its collection of computer games, which opened in late 2012, in June 2013.

    Fan articles and adaptations

On February 16, 2012, LEGO Minecraft was presented at LEGOworld , an adaptation of the game with Lego building blocks, which was launched in summer 2012. In the set called Micro World there is a creeper and the normal player character. There are now two more sets: Micro World: The Village and Micro World: The Nether .

Mojang is working with the American Merchandising maker Jinx together to produce clothing, toys and foam pickaxes. In 2012, Mojang generated over $ 1 million in sales from such products. For a Minecraft calendar published in 2014, players were able to submit pictures in early 2013. All proceeds should go to UN-HABITAT .

In 2019, the board game Minecraft - Builders & Biomes , which is based on the computer game, was released by Ravensburger .

The figure " Steve ", which can be found on some merchandise items, is also known.
