Gronkh (born April 10, 1977 in Braunschweig ; real name Erik Range ) is a German web video producer , computer and video game journalist , computer game developer , voice actor , musician , live streamer and entrepreneur .

Gronkh became known through so-called Let's Play videos on the Internet platform YouTube . In these he plays and comments on computer and video games . From July 2014 to May 19, 2016, Gronkh was the most subscribed YouTube channel in Germany and is still one of the most subscribed YouTube channels in Germany today .

Life

Erik Range was born on April 10, 1977 in Braunschweig as the son of a German and a Russian . He grew up with an older brother in the western part of Braunschweig. Range was already interested in computer games in his childhood . After his parents separated, he and his brother lived with his mother. Following the successful completion of the secondary school, John F. Kennedy Square, he first did his community service in a kindergarten , and later completed a diploma on a commercial high school and joined then trained as a specialist for application development from.

1996 to 2008

In 1996 he founded an internet agency called Range-IT, which was active in the field of web design and programming for private and business customers.

Together with others he built the publisher MDO Games GbR in 2000 , which u. a. published the online role-playing game Meridian 59 in German , through which Range met his later friend and business partner Sarazar (Valentin Rahmel) as a game developer under the nickname Gronkh . From 2001 to 2004 he also ran the website mcleod.de, which was a private project of his.

After Range left MDO Games at the end of 2004, he returned to working as a freelance web designer and programmer for his internet agency with moderate success. Parallel to his self-employment, Range has been involved in the mmorpg-planet.de project as an assistant and managing partner since he left MDO Games . From 2002 to 2007 Range lived in Gaarden-Ost , a district of Kiel .

In 2007 Range founded PlayMassive GmbH together with Valentin Rahmel as the successor to mmorpg-planet.de. PlayMassive operates several computer and video game websites and funds projects to develop new computer games.

2008 to 2012

In 2009 Range again founded an internet agency, Meine Favorite GmbH , since November 23, 2010 Range has only been a partner . Since 2010, Gronkh has published Let's Plays on YouTube every day and since 2011 at irregular intervals together with Sarazar on the YouTube channel Superhomies travel documentaries . He has also been running the website opensourcedbrain.de since 2010, which was a private blog and replaced his previous project mcleod.de by taking over most of the posts. Since 2011, no new posts have appeared on opensourcedbrain.de, but the domain still exists today, even if the page itself is no longer accessible. Range lived in the eastern ring area of Braunschweig between 2007 and 2012 and has lived in Cologne since then .

2012 to 2018

Range has been in a relationship with Tatjana Werth (alias Pandorya ) since December 1, 2012 , which he made public on April 10, 2016. 2012 to 2014 moderated Gronkh and Sarazar the MyVideo - Webshow Let's Play Together , in which it gets its friend and business partner Manuel Schmitt (aka SgtRumpel met). Since they dropped the show, Gronkh has broadcast a live stream every Friday on the Twitch service . At times, regular live streams also took place on Mondays. In 2013 he and Sarazar were guests on the TV show TV total . In 2015, looterkings GmbH, which Range founded together with Rahmel and Schmitt, published the dungeon game Looterkings on Steam Greenlight . In 2017, the State Media Authority of North Rhine-Westphalia asked the entrepreneur to apply for a broadcasting license . His lawyer then filed an application for "broadcast law harmlessness".

Since 2018

On January 1, 2018, Gronkh retired from the management of PlayMassive GmbH. Some Let's Players who were previously employed by PlayMassive have also switched and are now employed directly by Gronkh, e.g. B. Tobinator LP.

It was also announced that Gronkh has now applied for and received a broadcasting license. This fact caused criticism of the state media authorities on the Internet because Gronkh's channels were not television broadcasters in the traditional sense. Gronkh himself stated in a video that he did not consider his offer to require a license for broadcasting, but that he feared the legal costs of a court case against the state media authorities. On March 8, 2018, Gronkh was a guest on the late-night show Neo Magazin Royale moderated by Jan Böhmermann . On May 16, 2019 Gronkh was there again, and also appeared in an episode of the Young Sheldon parody Young Böhmermann . In December 2016 he and Böhmermann presented the online game Game Royale 2 on YouTube.

Since March 2018, Gronkh has been running the Start & Select podcast together with Joachim Hesse (alias Onkel Jo ) , which appears irregularly.

On June 1, 2018, Gronkh founded a new company, Gods of Gaming GmbH , based in the crane houses in Cologne. His partner Tatjana Werth (alias Pandorya ) and Let's Player Tobias Fulk (alias TobinatorLP ) are also represented there.

The second competition ended with a narrow victory for the Let's Play Together team. In 2013 and 2014, Gronkh hosted the MyVideo web show Let's Play Poker several times , in which various web video producers compete against each other in poker . However, Range publicly distanced himself from the format at the beginning of 2015 because he did not want to promote games of chance and will therefore no longer be available for this in the future.

Since 2014, Gronkh has broadcast a live stream on Twitch every Monday and Friday in which he plays computer games, answers questions from viewers and receives guests. Since March 2018, the regular streams have been limited to Friday, as he wants to withdraw from the Monday streams due to time constraints. These only take place irregularly.

In 2016 Range had a speaking role in the thriller game The Town of Light . He has also acted as a voice actor in the early 2017 films Resident Evil 6: The Final Chapter , The LEGO Batman Movie and Alien: Covenant . HWSQ - The "Howaizen Squad"

From June 2016, Gronkh started playing the game Dead by Daylight with his YouTube colleagues Pandorya , Tobinator and HerrCurrywurst . Together the four built a large community. They published 99 episodes of the game every two days until December 19, 2016. On December 21, 2016, a new project began with the game mode TTT ( Trouble in Terrorist Town ) in the game Garry's Mod , which was also released every two days. Several episodes were recorded in a row during the recordings. On July 15, 2017, the format was also ended after 99 episodes. Two days later, the third and longest joint Let's Play of the four YouTubers , the HWSQ project, started. The name of the project comes from a statement by YouTuber MrMoreGame . In this project, the aim of the four Let's Players was to try out different multiplayer games together and to get the viewers to buy the games themselves in order to support the developers. The four YouTubers' biggest ever multiplayer project with 347 episodes lasted until July 6, 2019, but was then ended abruptly because of a scandal surrounding the YouTuber HerrCurrywurst.
