action

A viral drug for Alzheimer's that was tested on monkeys had made them smart enough to break out and start their own civilization. The virus spread among people and ended for most with the deadly "monkey flu". A few years later, monkeys and a few surviving humans are in a state of war.

In search of Caesar's headquarters, troops of the renegade military special unit "Alpha-Omega" comb through the forests inhabited by the monkeys. The Alpha-Omega is under the command of an unscrupulous, insane colonel and considers themselves monkeys for low jobs and scouting tasks, which are disparagingly referred to as "donkeys". During an attack coordinated by the colonel via radio, the free monkeys fiercely resist and capture the only four surviving soldiers. Caesar lets the prisoners go to have the Colonel brought an offer of peace: He only demands that the people keep away from the forests, then both sides could live in peace.

Caesar's older son, Blue Eyes, and his officer, Rocket, return from a scouting tour to find a safe haven for the monkeys. They report from an ideal place; the way there leads through a desert and over a mountain range. While the monkey Winter wants to go there immediately for fear of humans, Caesar forbids an unprepared departure. That night, the Colonel and some of his men enter the monkey settlement and kill Caesar's wife and his son Blue Eyes. Winter is missing and the monkeys suspect he was scared to betray them.

Caesar sets out with a small group to take revenge on the Colonel, while the other monkeys get ready to head out into the desert. You meet a man who lives alone in an abandoned settlement. When he takes up his weapon, pretending to be peaceful, he is shot by Caesar. The monkeys find a mute girl about ten years old, take her with them and later give the little one the name Nova. The group then discovers an Alpha-Omega camp and meets Winter there, who reveals to them that the soldiers wanted to go to a place called “the border”. When Caesar Winter's request for forgiveness does not comply, he tries to betray the monkeys and is then suffocated by them. Caesar is now very worried about himself as he has become increasingly vengeful and ruthless like his former rival Koba. The monkeys follow the Alpha-Omega on its way and discover several soldiers who have been shot down and left lying. If someone is still alive, they find that he can no longer speak either.

They later meet a solitary intelligent chimpanzee named "bad monkey" who escaped from a zoo before the epidemic. He reports that the soldiers have moved into a base at the border and hesitantly leads them there. Once there, the group sees hundreds of captured monkeys. As they approach, they are discovered and shot at, and the gorilla Luca is killed when he stands in front of Caesar to protect himself. Caesar now decides to take revenge on the Colonel all by himself. He is captured and has to realize that this fate has also happened to a large part of his tribe and that the chimpanzees are being forced to build a wall in hard labor without food and without water. The Colonel has Caesar interrogated and informs him that the virus has mutated and is now leading to regression into a primitive species in the people who were previously thought to be immune. A clear sign of this is the loss of language. Caesar realizes that the Colonel is holed up because troops of the regular rest of the United States Army are pursuing and executing him for killing every infected person, including his own son. He speaks of a holy war for the continued existence of humanity.

Caesar is tortured and has to suffer from hunger and thirst, but is secretly provided with food and drink by the mute girl whom the monkeys have named Nova. She also leaves her rag doll in Caesar's cage. The Colonel finds it and takes it. Rocket allows himself to be captured and, together with Caesar, develops an escape plan for the monkeys, because the animals that are still free have found a tunnel that leads out of the base. While the monkeys flee, Caesar seeks the colonel for revenge. When the regular army attacks the base, Caesar runs into the Colonel and sees with astonishment that the Colonel can no longer speak himself because he has been infected with the mutated virus through the doll of the silent girl. Caesar then abandons his plan to shoot the Colonel, who then shoots himself.

During the battle between the human troops, the monkeys come under fire from alpha omegas. Caesar tries to hit him in the back, but is shot with a crossbow by a soldier he had once released. The monkey Red kills the man with a grenade launcher and thus saves Caesar. Caesar brings the fuel and ammunition reserves of the base to a gigantic explosion that destroys the Alpha-Omega and initially gives the regular army victory in the battle. However, this is buried a little later under a large snow avalanche triggered by the explosion. The monkeys can largely save themselves by quickly climbing trees that are still protruding. You are now going to your new home and you will find it in a very beautiful landscape. While most of the monkeys are happy to greet their new home, Caesar's adviser Maurice discovers his serious wound. He assures his leader that his surviving younger son Cornelius and the other monkeys will always remember Caesar and his deeds. Caesar stands one last time in front of his rescued and happy people and slowly dies sinking to the side in front of their eyes.

production

Pre-production

In January 2014, 20th Century Fox announced that it would produce a sequel to Planet of the Apes: Revolution . The film was originally supposed to be titled War of the Planet of the Apes and released in 2016. The revised title War for the Planet of the Apes was later announced and the theatrical release was postponed to July 2017.

In April 2017, producer Dylan Clark announced that Planet of the Apes: Survival would be in no way inferior to its predecessors: “It's definitely the biggest of the three new 'Planet of the Apes' films, no question about it. We shot on larger sets and used 65mm film to do justice to these gigantic locations. "

Cast and dubbing

Andy Serkis plays the main role of the chimpanzee Caesar. About this figure, who was once so tolerant in dealing with people, but is now changing, Serkis said: “He is forced into a situation in which the anger slumbering within him catches up with him and he can no longer defend himself against the wish To take revenge on people. ” Karin Konoval plays the orangutan Maurice and Terry Notary the chimpanzee Rocket. These three actors are the only ones who star in all three new "Planet of the Apes" films.

Tobias Meister speaks in the German dubbing Caesar, and Thomas Nero Wolff speaks the Colonel. The evil monkey is voiced by Lothar Blumhagen , Kevin Kraus speaks Travis, Daniel Fehlow lends his voice to Koba, and Maurice is voiced by Sabina Trooger .

Filming and film music

Filming of the film began on October 14, 2015 in Vancouver's Lower Mainland under the working title of Hidden Fortress and ended on March 15, 2016. Many of the actors wore motion capture suits , including Serkis for the role of Caesar.

The soundtrack was composed by Michael Giacchino , who in this capacity was already involved in the 2014 film Planet of the Apes: Revolution . The soundtrack for the film includes 17 pieces of music and was released by Sony Masterworks on August 4th, 2017.

Marketing and Publishing

A final trailer for the film was released in mid-May 2017.

On June 19, 2017, the film premiered in 37 countries as part of previews by 20th Century Fox. The film was released in US cinemas on July 14, 2017 and in German cinemas on August 3, 2017.

reception

Reviews

The film has so far won over 94 percent of Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.2 out of a possible 10 points.

The Village Voice's Bilge Ebiri says the visual effects are amazing, the action is exciting, the music is great, and Andy Serkis remains terrific.

In a film review by the dpa it is said that, as in the previous films from 2011 and 2014, it was the great apes brought to life by computer technology that dazzled the viewer time and again with their realistic appearance. In addition, the film seems to be inspired by American war films such as Platoon , not least because of the extremely atmospheric, almost eerie opening sequence, which could also come from a movie about the Vietnam War. Nevertheless, it was less the combative arguments that were remembered than some wonderfully narrated conciliatory encounters between humans and animals.

Dominik Kamalzadeh from Der Standard says that the amalgamation of motives critical of civilization and aesthetic daring is really astonishing for a blockbuster of around 150 million dollars: “The monkeys are abused in a labor camp like naked people, the cross waits for the rebellious. At the morning roll call, the soldiers also intone the US national anthem to fascist slogans. ”In the current climate of nationalism hardening every second, this generates an eerie response, according to Kamalzadeh.

Maximilian Haase from the evening newspaper sums up, Planet of the Apes: Survival, especially in the figure of Caesar, who will soon go down in film history as the most complex CGI character of all time, the doubts and morals, empathy, reason and also Brutality of incarnation. That a philosophical-political level like this goes hand in hand with the most impressive animations and special effects, according to Haase, is still a rare stroke of luck.

Gross profit

The film was released in Chinese cinemas on September 15, 2017 and stayed at the top of the cinema charts there for two weeks

After its theatrical release, the film landed at number 1 in the box office in a number of countries, including China, Russia, the United Kingdom and the USA, where it grossed around 147 million US dollars to date. In Germany, the film recorded 235,695 visitors on its opening weekend and a total of 775,440 visitors to date. The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings is $ 490.7 million.
