The 71st British Academy Film Awards ceremony took place on February 18, 2018 at the Royal Albert Hall in London to honor the best films of the 2017 film year . As usual, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards were presented in 22 categories . After Stephen Fry hosted the event for twelve years, British actress Joanna Lumley led the evening for the first time .

The nominations were announced on January 9, 2018. Shape of Water - The Whispering of Water by Guillermo del Toro was nominated for a BAFTA Award in 12 categories , including for best director and best screenplay. The film won three prizes, including best director. The British-American tragic comedy Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri by Martin McDonagh won most of the awards . She was able to convince the jury in the important categories of Best Film , Best British Film , Best Screenplay and Best Actress (for Frances McDormand ).
