action

After the death of his mother and with a father who was a bad example to him, a young prince lives in the heart of France. He loves glamorous parties and beautiful women, but himself most of all. When one day at one of his parties an old woman seeks refuge from the storm in his castle and wants to give him a red rose as a present, he wants to send her away again. Then the old woman turns into a young, beautiful sorceress. The prince wants to ask her forgiveness, but she has already realized that there is no love in his heart. As a punishment, she turns him into a hideous beast and places a curse on the castle and everyone in it. The servants and guests turn into furniture and other furnishings in the castle. Only when the prince succeeds in winning the love of a woman whom he also loves should the curse be lifted. The witch gives them the red rose that she wanted to present to the prince and declares that if the beast fails to feel love, which will be returned, and the last petal has fallen from the rose, they must be forever continue to exist in their current form. The years go by and no one remembers the residents and guests of the castle, because the witch erased all memories of them from people's minds.

A few years later: The beautiful Belle lives in a small French village with her father Maurice, who works as a clockmaker and repairs music boxes. The young woman is viewed with skepticism by the other residents of the village because she likes to take refuge in books, which distinguishes her from the other women in the village. When she was a small child, her father had to leave Paris with her because the plague raged there, which also cost her mother her life. In the village she is constantly harassed by her admirer Gaston, who desperately wants to take Belle as his wife. When Belle's father goes on a trip and promises to take a red rose with him, he gets lost and finds himself in an enchanted forest where it snows in the middle of June. His carriage is attacked by wolves, and after he was able to escape with difficulty, he seeks refuge in a castle. It is the prince's castle turned into a beast. Frightened by the speaking objects, he wants to flee, but when he discovers a rose bush in the garden of the castle, from which he wants to bring one of his daughter's with him and therefore plucks it, he is put by the beast and locked in a dungeon. His horse gallops back into the village, and because Belle realizes that her father must be in danger, she lets the white horse take her to the castle. When she finds her father there, but the beast refuses to release him because he accuses him of being a thief, she pushes her father out of the cell, locks the dungeon door and takes his place.

Despite her fear, she quickly befriends the enchanted staff of the castle, who see in her the one who will break the spell. After an argument with the beast, she escapes with her horse into the forest, where she is pursued by the wolves who attacked Maurice. Belle fights against the wolves with a thick branch, but when a wolf tries to pounce on Belle from behind, the beast intervenes and drives the wolves away. It is wounded, but Belle brings it to the castle and tends to its wounds. She realizes that the beast has a good heart and learns more and more things in common between herself and the beast. Meanwhile, Maurice, Belle's father, tells the villagers about the big scary beast, so Belle's admirer Gaston sets out to free her from the clutches of the beast. When Gaston realizes that Belle has fallen in love with the beast, he makes the villagers realize out of envy how cruel the figure is and that it would be a danger under any circumstances.

So the villagers decide to break into the haunted castle and kill the beast. However, they do not expect the enchanted furniture. This leads to a fight between the villagers and the haunted castle servants. Gaston, on the other hand, goes on a search to kill the beast.

When the villagers realize they cannot win the fight, they flee. And shortly before Gaston wants to kill the beast, Belle appears who wants to help the beast. After a fight between the beast and Gaston, the beast passes out. Gaston, on the other hand, falls down from the castle roof and dies. When Belle falls crying into the arms of the dying beast and confesses her love for him, the sorceress appears. The curse is now broken and everyone is turning back into their true form.

In the final scene everyone is dancing together: Belle and the prince, her servants and also the villagers who remember the castle again.

production

Pre-production

Back in 2009, Disney began working on a film adaptation of the Broadway musical . In 2011, composer Alan Menken said in an interview that the film was given a “green light”.

In April 2014, it was reported that Walt Disney Pictures was developing a live action version and remake of the 1991 cartoon after other reinterpretations such as Alice in Wonderland , Maleficent , Cinderella and The Jungle Book had already been released and were in the process of being implemented. On June 4, 2014, Bill Condon signed to direct the film, while Evan Spiliotopoulos was hired as a screenwriter. Condon originally planned not only to take inspiration from the original Disney film, but also to use all of the vocal numbers from the Broadway musical by Menken / Ashman in the film, with the intention of making the film a "straightforward real film musical on a large budget" . In September 2014 it was announced that Stephen Chbosky ( Maybe Better Tomorrow ) will be revising the script. Menken will return as a film music composer and will use original songs from the cartoon in the film that were composed and written by him and Howard Ashman . Menken and Tim Rice will also create new songs for the film. In June 2015, Menken announced that the film would not include songs that were written for the Broadway musical. In the end, the film still contains 9 songs from the Broadway musical in new arrangements and 10 new songs.

Cast and dubbing

Dan Stevens at the premiere for the film

On January 26, 2015, Emma Watson was announced in the lead role as Belle . Its cast attracted wide media coverage and was generally welcomed. On March 4, 2015, the cast of Luke Evans and Dan Stevens as Gaston and the Beast was ripe, which was confirmed by Watson in the following days through tweets . Josh Gad joined the cast on March 13 as LeFou , Gaston's sidekick. Emma Thompson was confirmed as Madame Pottine on March 16 , while Kevin Kline was announced as Maurice , Belle's father. Audra McDonald joined the cast on March 27 as Madame de Gardarobe , and Gugu Mbatha-Raw on April 13 as Plumette . Ian McKellen was signed on April 10th as Von Unruh , the loyal servant of the beast who was turned into a clock. On April 21, it was announced that Ewan McGregor would play Lumière , the candelabra, and Stanley Tucci would play Cadenza , a harpsichord, a character newly created for the film.

Susan Egan , who played the role on Broadway, commented the cast with Watson as "perfect". Paige O'Hara , who voiced Belle in the cartoons, offered to help Watson during her singing lessons.

The German-language dubbed version was produced by Film- & Fernseh-Synchron , Berlin under the dialogue direction by Manuel Straube . The musical recordings and arrangements took place in the Jamzone Studios in Munich under the direction of Thomas Amper.

Filming

The shooting of the film began in the Shepperton Studios in London on 18 May 2015. The recordings with the main actors were completed on August 21, 2015. Six days later, co-producer Jack Morrissey confirmed that filming was officially complete.

Literary basis

The motifs of the French folk tale Beauty and the Beast are estimated by European fairy tale researchers about 250 to 600 years old. As in a folk tale, unlike the 1991 film, Belle only wants to receive a rose from her father. But others cite the life of Pedro Gonsalvus , born in 1537 , called “Wolf Man”, who suffered from hypertrichosis , as the source of inspiration.

publication

On March 16, 2015, Disney announced that the film would be released in 3D on March 17, 2017. The first moving images from the film were shown at Disney's three-day D23 Expo in August 2015. The finished film was released in German cinemas on March 16, 2017.

The first official trailer for the film was shown by Disney on May 22, 2016, on the news program Good Morning America , following an announcement . In the first 24 hours, the trailer received 91.8 million views, which is a new record worldwide and even the number of views for the teasers for the films Star Wars: The Force Awakens , The First Avenger: Civil War and Avengers: Age of Ultron surpassed. The first official teaser poster was released on July 7, 2016.

On March 7, 2017, the ticket service Fandango reported such high pre-sales that the best March start of all time in the USA appears possible. According to a report from Deadline.com, the presale numbers of Disney's top titles of summer 2016, The First Avenger: Civil War and Finding Dory , have already been exceeded.

Disney has announced through official sources that two male characters are about to fall in love. This is a debut for Disney as no open homosexual characters have ever been featured in Disney films. In previous productions, homosexuality was only indicated.

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 6 . The statement of reasons for release states: “Children from 6 years of age have no problems following the story and viewing it as a pure fairy tale without any reference to reality. The focus is on positive figures, singing and joy. In the end there is a dramatic situation when the villain shoots the beast in the back. This scene can momentarily scare younger elementary school children. A lasting fear can be ruled out, however, since the scene is quickly broken up and there is a happy happy ending. "

In Russia , the film was only released from the age of 16 and children under the age of 16 can only watch the film when accompanied by an adult. In the film, the character LeFou has special feelings for Gaston . According to director Bill Condon, he was supposed to get a "gay moment" while dancing with Stanley, a friend of Gaston's. For this and other reasons of censorship, the film was not allowed to be shown at all in one cinema in the USA and in all cinemas in Kuwait .

Reviews

Regarding the casting of the main role with Emma Watson by the director Cornelia Geißler from the Berliner Zeitung says: “His leading actress surpasses the original because she can show concern and devotion with her whole being, anger and ambition. It's a role that suits Emma Watson. She has this radiant beauty, she is known beyond the screen as a smart and confident woman. "

Gross profit

After its theatrical release, the film landed at number 1 in the box office in a number of countries, including the US, China, the United Kingdom, Russia and France. In North America, Beauty and the Beast made one of the ten best starts of all time. In Germany, the film also reached number 1 on the cinema charts and has so far recorded 3,426,749 visitors, making it number 5 among the most successful films of the year . The worldwide revenue of the film from theatrical screenings to date is 1.26 billion US dollars. This places the film in second place among the most successful films of 2017 and in 17th place (as of August 8, 2020) among the world's most successful films of all time . The budget was around $ 160 million.
