action

In 1919, after the First World War , the equestrian Holt Farrier returned with only one arm to the Medici Brothers' circus , which was directed by Max Medici. The circus is in financial difficulties and Medici was forced to sell the circus horses after Holt's wife and partner Annie died of the Spanish flu . Medici hires Holt to take care of the pregnant elephant Mrs. Jumbo .

Mrs. Jumbo gives birth to a cub with exceptionally large ears, and Medici hires Holt to cover the ears before the public can see the calf. But when he first appeared in the circus, the little one accidentally reveals his ears. The crowd mockingly referred to him as Dumbo and threw peanuts and other items at him. Mrs. Jumbo is desperate. Angry about the bad treatment of her calf, she rages in the ring, causes significant damage and accidentally kills a cruel carer during the tour in Joplin, Missouri . To avoid problems with the press, Medici sells Mrs. Jumbo. Holt's children, Joe and Milly, comfort Dumbo and discover that the little elephant can fly by beating its ears. The children also find out that feathers are what trigger Dumbo's willingness to fly. In one performance, Dumbo plays the role of a fire brigade clown trying to put out a fire with water from his trunk: but the performance fails, and Dumbo is trapped on a high platform surrounded by flames. Milly bravely risks her life to bring Dumbo a feather, which gives him the confidence to fly. Audiences are stunned when Dumbo flies, and the newspapers report his unusual talent.

VA Vandevere, entrepreneur and owner of Dreamland amusement park, proposes a collaboration to Medici: Medici becomes a partner of Vandevere, and the company of the Medici Brothers' Circus is hired to perform in Dreamland. Vandevere later demands that Dumbo fly with French trapeze artist Colette Marchant.

When Colette and Dumbo make their debut appearance in Dreamland, Dumbo almost falls from a high platform and panics because there is no safety net. Dumbo hears his mother, who is imprisoned in the remote "Nightmare Island", a kind of horror department of Dreamland. Dumbo interrupts the show and flies to her from the circus arena. Fearing that Mrs. Jumbo will be too much of a distraction for Dumbo, the spiteful Vandevere orders her to be removed and killed. Vandevere also fires all Medici artists from Dreamland. When Holt and the rest of the Medici troop learn what Vandevere is up to with Mrs. Jumbo, they decide to free the two elephants. The circus performers use their various skills to free Mrs. Jumbo from her enclosure, while Holt and Colette help Dumbo fly out of the circus. Vandevere tries in vain to prevent this from happening, but accidentally starts a fire caused by a fault in Dreamland's power system. The fire spreads and destroys the park.

After the little elephant saved Holt and his family from the fire, the circus troupe takes Dumbo and his mother to the harbor, where they board a ship back to their home in India . After that, the circus is rebuilt as the Medici Family Circus and thrives with Colette as the youngest member of the group, and Milly organizes a scientific exhibition. The performers are disguised as animals in accordance with the new circus policy not to keep wild animals in captivity for the entertainment of the public.

In the meantime, Dumbo and his mother meet a herd of wild elephants in the jungle, who applaud their newest members, while the little elephant flies around, delighted at the freedom and togetherness with his mother.

publication

Differences from the cartoon

The content of the remake is very loosely based on the classic animation from 1941. The story of Holt Farrier and his children did not appear in the original, nor was the insidious businessman Vandevere or the artist Colette Marchant. Plus, Dumbo and his mother are brought back to the wild in the end while staying at the circus in the cartoon. While the “ pink elephants ” in the cartoon are created through the influence of alcohol, in the remake they are created as a circus performance through oversized soap bubbles . For the new film adaptation, the Norwegian artist Aurora has reinterpreted the song Baby Mine .

criticism

“A remake of the classic animated film from 1941, realized with great effort, which, in a mixture of real film and computer animation, throws an almost naturalistic look at the history of the Depression after the First World War. Only in the second half does the magic begin to develop that made the original a timeless classic. "
