The Jungle Book is a remake of the cartoon of the same name from 1967. It combines live film recordings and computer animation. Like the original film, the film is based on the jungle book stories by Rudyard Kipling . Directed by Jon Favreau , the screenplay by Justin Marks . The film was released on April 7, 2016 in Australia and Russia, and the day after in India and Indonesia. The film opened on April 14, 2016 in Austria and Germany, and one day later in the United States.

action

The human boy Mowgli, after his father was killed by the ruthless tiger Shere Khan and he alone in the Indian jungle , is the Black Panther Bagheera found and at a wolf family accommodated. The wolf mother Raksha raises him, he grows up happy and content with puppies and young wolves and Akela, the pack leader, takes him into the pack. Akela repeatedly tells his pack and Mowgli that the true strength of wolves lies in their community, and Baghira prepares the foundling for survival in the jungle through training. Again and again, Baghira reminds the boy that he should not do things the way people do, but should behave like wolves.

In the dry season, all kinds of jungle animals come together on the "Rock of Peace" to drink, and a law of the jungle says that they do not harm each other during this time. Most of the animals that come together there have never seen a human child before. Then the one-eyed and terrifying tiger Shir Khan appears and warns the animals that a human child will one day become a human being and that it will threaten the jungle. Shir Khan wants to eliminate all human threats for the sake of the law of the jungle.

In order not to expose the wolf family to any further dangers, Mowgli, accompanied by Baghira, leaves the pack to return to the people, but Shir Khan does not stop chasing him. On the journey that he has to continue alone after an attack by the tiger, Mowgli meets the insidious python Kaa, who tries to hypnotize him with her voice and her gaze . Here Mowgli learns the secret of the death of his father from Kaa: He had been killed by Shir Khan and had previously injured his eye in a fight with a torch. When Kaa is about to devour the human boy, Balu rescues him.

The cheerful brown bear asks Mowgli something in return for his rescue: He should help him to get to honeycombs that are on a rock face. The two become friends and Balu offers him to found a "working group"; for that he will protect him. Baghira soon tracks them down in their cave, where Balu and Mowgli have already hoarded a large number of the honeycombs. Baghira explains to Balu that Mowgli is only safe from Shir Khan in the human world and wants to continue to bring him there.

Meanwhile, Shir Khan visits the wolves, who miss Mowgli very much, and kills Akela to demonstrate the seriousness of his intention to kill Mowgli. Even on another visit, he does not allow himself to be appeased by Raksha. The night before Baghira wants to bring Mowgli into the human world, he helps a herd of elephants , which the other animals believe, once created the jungle and are therefore treated with deep respect by them, to rescue their young from a pit . Balu and Baghira observe the situation and realize that Mowgli, even if he uses the tricks of the people, does not use them against, but for the good of the animals of the jungle. Before they can continue their journey, Mowgli is kidnapped by a horde of monkeys who take him to the orangutan-like Gigantopithecus King Louie, their leader. He presents Mowgli his collection of everyday objects from the human world that the monkeys have collected. Mowgli himself has never seen such things before and does not recognize the meaning and purpose of the cowbell that is among the strange objects. King Louie tries to get Mowgli to reveal the secret of the fire , known in the jungle as the Red Flower . In return he offers Mowgli to rule over the jungle together. Baloo and Baghira free Mowgli. King Louie lets loose his monkeys on the two and pursues Mowgli, telling him about Akela's death. But the temple inhabited by King Louie collapses over him. Angry that Balu and Baghira have kept Akela's death from him, Mowgli realizes that his true strength and superiority, even over much larger animals, lies in his skills. Mowgli steals a torch and brings it into the jungle, but accidentally causes a forest fire .

The animals, including Shir Khan, have come together again at the Friedensfels, where they believe they can shelter themselves from the fire in the water. Mowgli throws away the torch, his most powerful weapon, to show the animals that he is not a dangerous person for them. Shir Khan was just waiting for that. When he tries to throw himself on the human boy, Balu intervenes, but is overpowered by Shir Khan after a short fight. The other animals now also turn against Shir Khan. Mowgli wants to get into a physical confrontation with the tiger, but Baghira tells him to fight the human way after all. Mowgli then runs into the burning forest. There he outsmarted Shir Khan, who followed him by luring him up a dead tree and then onto a branch. The branch breaks off and Shir Khan falls into the burning forest. Mowgli, who rescues himself on a constructed swing on another branch, returns to the Friedensfels with a herd of elephants, riding on the young animal he had rescued from the pit. The elephants put out the forest fire by diverting the river. Ultimately, Mowgli doesn't have to leave the jungle and the animals accept him as one of their own, as an equal among equals. In the end he has hunting lessons again, and Balu is also present. After Akela's death, Raksha takes over the leadership of the pack.

production

Production history

The 1967 film The Jungle Book , which partially served as a template for the real film remake, is still the most successful film of all time in terms of the number of moviegoers in Germany and also received an Oscar nomination in the category Best Film Music for the song The Bare in 1968 Necessities (German version, try it with comfort ) and a Grammy nomination.

As early as 1994, the Disney studios had produced a live film adaptation of Kipling's works. However, this is very loosely based on the cartoon.

Disney continues the series of remakes of its own cartoons with The Jungle Book based on Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland (2010), Maleficent (2014) and Kenneth Branagh's Cinderella (2015). For Scott Mendelsohn of Forbes , Disney is on the right track to generate a new sub-genre with the latest real-life version of a classic: “The Jungle Book” is a remarkable achievement and even more reason for Disney to be optimistic.

With The Jungle Book, the director did not create an exact remake of the cartoon and, according to his own statements, was largely inspired by Rudyard Kipling's novel, in particular by the atmosphere that the author brought into the story and the feeling of order and culture in the jungle, which is shown in the literary model in the law of the jungle and the peace agreement during the dry season. The screenwriter also left out some elements from the 1967 film; However, he took over part of the poetry of Kipling and the dialogues of the book and, overall, kept closer to this, which distinguishes him from Walt Disney , who had instructed his animators not to work directly from the literary model. The principle of the Wolves The strength of the pack of wolf and the wolf, the pack has been prepared by screenwriter verbatim from the 1895 published book of Kipling Second Jungle Book (AKA The Second Jungle Book accepted).

Staff, cast and dubbing

Director Jon Favreau at the world premiere in Sydney in March 2016

In July 2013, it was announced that Justin Marks had been hired to work on the film's script. Jon Favreau was confirmed as director on November 5, 2013 . The camera was taken over by Bill Pope , who had previously worked in this role in several 3D and action films.

The announcement of the cast and voices took place between March and August 2014, including Ben Kingsley (Baghira), Bill Murray (Balu), Idris Elba (Shir Khan), Christopher Walken (King Louie), Scarlett Johansson (Kaa) and Lupita Nyong ' o (raksha). Favreau chose Johansson as the voice of Kaa, who is actually a male character, because he felt the original 1967 film was a bit too manly. Favreau also decided to change King Louie's species from an orangutan to a gigantopithecus , in accordance with the fact that orangutans are not native to the scene of the story. Garry Shandling lent his voice to the porcupine Ikki as the speaker in a cameo . Shandling died a few days before the film's world premiere.

On July 15, 2014, Neel Sethi was given the lead role as Mowgli and his first role in a feature film from director Jon Favreau and casting director Sarah Finn after an extensive search in New Zealand , Canada , India , the United Kingdom and the United States . Favreau chose Sethi because he seemed to combine what reminded the director of the Mowgli from the original Disney cartoon. Besides Ritesh Rajan , who plays his father, Sethi is the only actor who actually appeared in front of the camera in the film. After finally finding the right cast for Mowgli, Favreau said: “Neel has tremendous talent and charisma. A lot rests on his little shoulders, but I'm confident that he can handle it. "

At the end of February 2016, the German dubbing voices were also announced, including Armin Rohde (Balu), Heike Makatsch (Raksha), Christian Berkel (King Louie), Jessica Schwarz (Kaa), Ben Becker (Shir Khan), Joachim Król (Baghira) and Justus von Dohnányi (Akela). The young speaker Pablo Ribet-Buse dubbed Mowgli. The German dubbing was done by FFS Film- & Fernseh-Synchron GmbH in Berlin. Axel Malzacher wrote the dubbing book and directed it.

Filming and post-production

Neel Sethi took on the role of Mowgli in the film

The shooting took place at the Los Angeles Center Studios in Los Angeles . The film was shot using blue screen technology . Leading actor Neel Sethi was placed alongside dolls to interact with, which Disney had obtained from Jim Henson's Creature Shop . Sometimes hand puppets were also used, or the director took over this function. The real shots for the scenes in the film in which Mowgli swims with Balu were made in a pool of water. In the course of filming, Sethi met all of the actors who lent their voices to the characters in the film, but not Idris Elba, who speaks the tiger Shir Khan in the film.

The team Favreau engaged has already worked on similar film projects, such as Avatar or Life of Pi: Shipwreck with Tiger . So Drew Andrew L. Jones as art director in charge of the film and Mike Stassi for motion capture . The special effects responsible JD Schwalm as Special Effects Supervisor, responsible for the visual effects were Shaun Friedberg as Technical Director and Robert Legato visual effects supervisor, the innovative for his work on the visual effects for Hugo and Titanic with two Oscars was excellent. Legato commented on the team's work: "We made it so comfortable for Jon Favreau that he was able to direct it as if it were a real film ."

The team prepared for work by photographing more than 100,000 shots of the real Indian jungle and analyzing shots of wild animals. It became clear that a different approach had to be chosen for each animal depicted in the film. It was shown that dogs and wolves communicate very expressively via their eyebrows, but not so much via their mouths. However, cats rarely use their eyebrows during communication, and bears use both lips and eyebrows. This had to be taken into account for the representation of the various facial expressions. Special specifications from Disney made it necessary to use material from zoos and nature reserves as available reference material when recording the real animals.

The effects in the film, especially the numerous animal figures, were implemented using motion capturing and CGI . A total of 54 different animal species and 224 different figures were generated. Favreau insisted not to overuse the motion capture technique to avoid an uncanny valley effect . Although the Disney characters were projected into the picture with Mowgli, Favreau had real sets recreated, so that the background in scenes in which the characters walk through the jungle, for example, does not come from the computer. For the 3D editing of the film, Walt Disney Pictures was able to win Weta Digital in an early phase of production , a visual effects company that had previously worked on films such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Avatar ( Joe Letteri , Randall William Cook et al) was awarded several Oscars. In addition, the company Digital Domain was hired.

Eric Eisenberg of CinemaBlend notes, "The film set a new standard in the world of CGI and is further evidence that we have truly stepped into a new generation of filmmaking." Forbes ' Scott Mendelson believes Disney showed through the film have that all cartoons can be adapted as real films with the help of CGI .

Equipment and costumes

In addition to Supervising Art Director Andrew L. Jones , Ravi Bansal and John Lord Booth III , who were responsible for the production design in the film , Mike Stassi acted as Motion Capture Art Director. Christopher Glass was responsible for the production design. Due to the fact that the film was mainly shot in front of a blue screen, the film set was rather practical and not very complex and, according to Glass, was mainly used to provide orientation for Sethi and to synchronize his movements with the CGI animations. A traditional film set was only needed for a few scenes. For the scene in which Mowgli flees from Shir Khan into the almost dry river bed, mud was prepared on set, which was repeatedly sprayed with water so that it looked fresh, especially on Mowgli's body. For the scenes in the river, two water tanks were built, which were equipped with pumps and nozzles to generate the current.

The costumes used in the film were designed by Laura Jean Shannon . Her task was to make a piece of clothing for Mowgli that on the one hand looks authentic and on the other hand does not disturb Sethi during the shooting. Shannon said she wanted to create something organic that would not distract the viewer from the story and remind one of the Mowgli familiar from the cartoon. The result was a red loincloth and a history for it. Shannon imagined that Mowgli had worn a traditional Indian dhoti as a toddler that had faded and weathered over time. Sethi later said the loincloth was comfortable but reminded him of a diaper. Only in one scene did Sethi wear a different costume. The protective clothing in which Mowgli fetches the honeycombs from the rock face for Balu was made from leaves.

Sound design and film music

Christopher Boyes and Frank E. Eulner were responsible for the sound design and the sound editing . Tasha Robinson from The Verge describes the result as an extremely effective sound design that makes every step and every stroke tangible.

Richard M. Sherman was responsible for the new lyrics in the film. He had already written the songs for the original film together with his older brother Robert B. Sherman . The Bare Necessities is sung in the film with Terry Gilkyson's original lyrics by Bill Murray, and Trust in Me is also included in the film, sung by Johansson.

The actual score is from John Debney , who was nominated for an Oscar in 2005 for his work on The Passion of the Christ . Debney said of Favreau's specifications that he wanted classic Disney film music and did not place so much emphasis on recognizable Indian influences in it. Debney recorded the film music supported by a 60-part choir and a 105-piece orchestra. A number of percussion instruments were also used here. Each part of the jungle was thus accompanied by music that was tuned to the mood there, and each main character in the film had its own sound. For example, tubas and marimbas were chosen as instruments for balu and drums for King Louie . A completely new instrument was specially developed to accompany the performances of the civets . Sidney Schering talks about the result of a monumental film score that cleverly mixes new themes with reprises of the 1967 pieces . Critics like Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter saw Debney's work on the score as Oscar-worthy. In December 2016, the soundtrack was included in the list of candidates (longlist) , from which the members of the Academy determine the official nominations, at the 2017 Academy Awards in the category Best Film Music , but received no award.

The soundtrack for the film was released on April 15, 2016, on the same day that the film celebrated its cinema premiere. The soundtrack includes 24 songs and has a total length of 74:17 min.

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 6 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film is very opulent and staged with stunning images. However, there is a constant change between exciting and relaxing scenes, so that children of primary school age are not overwhelmed. Individual effective action and threat scenes can be a challenge for 6- to 7-year-old children, but a lasting fear cannot be assumed: In Mowgli they will find a strong and courageous figure who can identify with their animal friends and who give them sufficient security. In addition, child-related issues such as friendship, love and care, respect for nature and the positive resolution of conflicts and the happy ending contribute to emotional relief. "

Reviews

First edition of The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling (1894)

The film was able to convince 95 percent of the critics at Rotten Tomatoes and was thus one of the best-rated films of 2016. The film also emerged as the winner of the 18th Annual Golden Tomato Awards in the category Best Kids / Family Movie 2016 .

Variety's Andrew Barker says Disney's smartest move was to put the reins in the hands of Jon Favreau, whose work brings a welcome lightness to the captivating plot. He also emphasizes the consistently excellent voice work in the film, above all that of Nyong'o, the motherly warmth and that of Elba, which conveys an arrogant malice. Barker also praises the team for the visual effects, which can accurately represent every tree, every waterfall and every flower from Rudyard Kipling's book. The talking animals in the film were created with the same care using CGI technology : “It is not only that the animal movements look real [...], the humanized animal mouth movements also appear natural when speaking, without turning the animals into caricatures . "

Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter comments: “The extraordinary photographic realism gives the film such a lifelike depth that it sets it apart from the tiring child-like schema that tries to ingratiate yourself in films like Madagascar and films from the Ice Age series , but that eventful adventures will also attract an adult audience. "

The film was also often described by the German-speaking media as "full of tension like an action thriller" and praised for its breathtaking 3D level of detail. For Katja Nicodemus from NDR Kultur Online , the film is “a kind of showcase for contemporary North American animation technology, so every tiny hair can be seen. Every muscle of the wild animals was designed so perfectly and the plants and beings of the jungle look so lifelike. The tiger Shir Khan looks like he has fallen out of an animal documentary. ”For Susanne Burg from Deutschlandradio Kultur, the plot looks like a“ Darwinian Survival of the Fittest ”, and for Elmar Krekeler from Die Welt “ the magical, ultra-realistic conjuring up of the jungle looks like one Menetekel ".

However, it was repeatedly criticized that the film was “without a heart”, showed a “soulless fixation on technology”, but lacked imagination, was “less funny and lively” than the original, and got along “without laughing and without joke” and through the brilliant technology demystifies the old jungle fairy tale.

In addition, it has been criticized many times that the film is only partially suitable for children due to its extraordinary realism and not for the delicate minds of smaller children. It is often assumed that Disney did not want to appeal to a children's audience, as the first trailer showed. Alexander Horwath , film scholar and director of the Filmmuseum Wien , however, does not believe that the film was only aimed at the adult target group and assumes that it was preceded by extensive market studies: “It was well checked, how much violence, how much grief how much seriousness you can pack into such a story, including how many potentially fear-inducing moments. And that you don't take the risk of really overwhelming that part of the audience, which is smaller or younger. "

After the first half of the 2016 film year was over, the film by Kristopher Tapley and Jenelle Riley of Variety was raised as a possible candidate for a Best Visual Effects Award at the upcoming Academy Awards . The world created in the film was realized with some of the best visual effects that one has ever seen and according to the latest state of the art. The film could also be considered for a nomination for best animated film, but Disney will probably not seek it because there are other in-house contenders in the category, such as Finding Dory . Scott Feinberg from The Hollywood Reporter also sees possible Oscar candidates in film and director, but also in scriptwriter Justin Marks and cameraman Bill Pope .

In December 2016, it was announced that the film had been shortlisted for the Best Visual Effects category at the 2017 Academy Awards . A little later there was an official nomination.

Gross profit

With an estimated budget of $ 175 million, the film grossed almost $ 29 million worldwide in just a few days after its international theatrical release (as of April 11, 2016), which means an extremely good start for the film and in some countries for set new records in the cinema charts. The film also got off to a good start in North American cinemas, where it had far exceeded expectations for the opening weekend with revenues of over 100 million US dollars and immediately made it to number 1 on the box office, where it stayed for a total of three weeks. The film also reached number 1 in China, where it grossed around 50 million US dollars on the opening weekend, making it one of the best ever Hollywood film starts. In India, the film was the most successful Hollywood film ever with grossing over US $ 15 million in its first week and later became the most successful film of the year there.

In the annual ranking of the German cinema charts, the film is 14th of the most visited films in 2016, with around 1.9 million visitors . In the United States, The Jungle Book grossed over 364 million US dollars, making it fifth among the most successful films of the year there (as of January 2, 2017). The gross profit worldwide is nearly 967 million US dollars. This places the film in fifth place among the most successful films of 2016 and currently 39th on the list of the world's most successful films .

Credits and trivia

At the end of the film you can see a book cover closing. It is Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book , which served as a literary model for the film and is exactly the edition that was shown at the beginning of the original film from 1967, but was opened in it. In the credits it becomes a popup book from which small versions of the animals previously seen in the film unfold.

continuation

On April 12, 2016, Disney announced that it was already planning a sequel that Favreau would direct again. Brigham Taylor will also be recruited as producer, while Justin Marks will write the script again. In September 2016, The Walt Disney Studios officially announced that, after their successful collaboration on The Jungle Book with Favreau, they would produce a sequel to the film and also work with the director on a real-life version of The Lion King .
